Many Arsenal fans were convinced that Danny Welbeck was lucky to get away with getting a penalty when we were 1-0 down against AC Milan at the Emirates last week, but the linesman was just yards away and advised the ref to award Arsenal a penalty.
Welbeck slotted the spot-kick past the keeper to restore parity and keep the Gunners hopes of progressing alive, but the slow motion replays showed there was very minimal contact from the Milan defender, certainly not enough to warrant a penalty.
Arsenal went on score twice more, with Welbeck getting the final goal as well, but when Arsene Wenger was asked after the game if he thought that it was really a penalty, he replied: “There’s two things: was it a penalty or not? I don’t know. The Italian players were unhappy with it. I can understand that, because I don’t really know what it was,” Wenger said.
“After that, Danny took the penalty in a convincing way, and I will watch it again and give my honest feeling about it.
“I will give him my honest feeling about it as well (if I view it as a dive), don’t worry.”
But we never found out what wenger’s thoughts were, but it has been revealed today that UEFA had decided not to take any action against the Arsenal striker. RTE reported today A spokesman for European football’s governing body confirmed on Monday that no case had been opened against the 27-year-old but made no further comment.
