It is being reported in France that Arsenal tried to sign Clinton N’Jie from Tottenham Hotspur this week, before he joined Marseille on an initial loan deal.
The Cameroon international was likened to Samuel Eto’o, although not solely because of his nationality, and was expected to have a bright future in the game, having thoroughly impressed in Ligue 1.
He did not manage to continue that form in the English Premier League last year, and now looks set to leave Tottenham already.
It is reported that he is set to move to Marseille on an initial one-year loan deal, with a €7 Million option included, which they can trigger only if they stay in the French top flight, and he picks up X amount of appearances.
Later reports are now claiming that Arsenal tried to scupper the deal however, by trying to bring N’Jie to the Emirates Stadium instead, but their noisy neighbours are claimed to have turned down their approach.
The Gunners were linked with the 22 year-old prior to his move to White Hart Lane, but he apparently preferred to try his hand with Spurs instead.
Arsenal have already missed out on a number of attacking targets this summer, and now look to have missed out on another, although I’m certain N’Jie would not have had the exciting effect that fans are craving from an attacking addition.
Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and new signing Takuma Asano are our current options for the central role next term, and fans and Wenger alike, are keen to see a top goalscorer added to that.
Jamie Vardy has already turned down a move to North London, while deals for Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain and Alexandre Lacazette have frustratingly looked on-and-off for much of the window.
Fans are now getting frustrated with a matter of weeks until the league kicks off, and the prospect of relying on Olivier Giroud and Theo to try and help us win our first PL trophy since 2004.
Is this saga really going to go down to deadline day? Could Arsene really have got a note out of N’Jie?
