Arsene Wenger has admitted that he had discussed the possibility of Olivier Giroud leaving Arsenal this summer after the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette, but the Frenchman finally decided to stay and fight for his place in the first team. But now that this question has been resolved, where does this leave Danny Welbeck, who is now facing competition from Lacazette, Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alex Iwobi for a starting spot in the front three.
Giroud had been closely linked with a move to our Top Six rivals Everton, but now that he has pledged his loyalty to Arsenal, there are new rumours saying that they have switched their attention to the English striker instead. Welbeck himself has recently spoken about the glut of front men at the club after Lacazette’s arrival. “He’s come into the team and he’s got a couple of goals in pre-season and hopefully he will when the season starts.
“It’s nice to be playing with him, with the competition for the forward line now, it’s a healthy debate for the manager to have and I think everyone’s looking forward to the new season.”
Obviously with all of our attackers fit, then Wenger’s best line-up would feature Ozil, Lacazette and Alexis as starters with Giroud waiting in the wings as supersub, so how many actual starts would Welbeck get in the normal course of things?
