Emery says Koscielny will still be Arsenal captain – but what about on the pitch?

Arsene Wenger regularly had non-playing Arsenal captains like Per Mertesacker last year, but our captain on the field was Laurent Koscielny who was more a silent leader by example rather than a vocal encourager of his team-mates.

But now that Koscielny is set to become yet another off-field club captain, Unai Emery has to choose which of our current or new squad members will actually lead on the pitch. Emery told Arsenal.com: “My idea is to know every player and to know, also, the personality of the players. And then, I think my first idea is to have five captains in the team. But at the moment, I don’t know the names.

“I need to know more and also, firstly, Koscielny is the first captain now and for me, I have respect for that.

“Then, we are looking at, looking for, who are the players whose personality is the best in the dressing room. We want to keep the respect for these players and to find the captain and choose very well the best player for that.”

Well Emery has brought in strong fighters like Sokratis and Lichsteiner but Torreira is far from ready to be a captain until his English is up to scratch. Xhaka was Litchsteiner’s deputy at the World Cup, and Ramsey is considered by many as captain material because of his long service to the club.

Well we have our first game tomorrow, let’s see if anyone stands out ahead of our games in Singapore, but who do you think should be the on-pitch captain?
