Forget history – Arsenal still need to win more trophies!

Why winning trophies is important for Arsenal? by SE

At the very onset of this article, let us not forget that Arsenal won the FA Cup this past May, and brought an end to the 9-year long trophy drought. Albeit winning the domestic cup competition cannot be as significant as winning the Premier League or the Champions League – two most coveted pieces of silverware for any top club – it would have given Wenger’s wizards the relief of having finally won a trophy after so long, as well as the belief to continue in the same vein in the future. During the early stages of this season, the North Londoners haven’t played to their pedigree. But, with time on their side and injury casualties to ease off, the Gunners could well resurrect their season and, from the supporters’ point of view, add to last season’s FA Cup win. Read on, as we dissect why winning trophies is important for Arsenal.

History means nothing
Sometimes, when the club hasn’t won a trophy of substance for a long time, it’s natural to bask in on the rich history and rave about it to our friends, opposing supporters and, personally, use it as a reason to erase the frustration of not having won a trophy recently. However, in Arsenal’s case – in order for them to remain a top club – winning trophies is of paramount importance. The ‘Arsenal’ brand is there to be protected, and, for that to happen: it’s important to keep rewriting history, and not be satisfied with the prevalent history and achievements.
Attract and keep hold of some of the top talents

In modern day football, attracting top talent and marquee players to become a part of the club depends on whether or not you’re in the UEFA Champions League. We saw that happen to Manchester United, and how they struggled to bring in the players they wanted, because of the lack of continental involvements. A certain Wesley Sneijder, the Dutch No.10 who plays for Galatasaray, used it as a reason to quell moving to Old Trafford and reunite with Van Gaal. Coming to Arsenal, however, Wenger deserves the plaudits for dragging the Gunners into the coveted competition for the 17th year in succession. However, the Frenchman needs to remake Arsenal into a winning team, and a team that wins trophies, if he is to attract top talent in future and hold on to the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

Final Thought
Winning trophies is one thing, but it’s the ambition that counts. In Arsenal’s case, the hunger to win trophies seems to have disappeared, and the earlier it gets addressed by the men who matter, the better it will be for the world brand of Arsenal Football Club.
