Giroud still hoping to be Arsenal’s first-choice striker next season

Olivier Giroud has been linked with a move away from Arsenal if, as expected, a top class striker comes to the Emirates this summer. He is keen to keep his place in the France national team as well, with competition from younger strikers like Lacazette and Mbappe but to do that he must be playing regular first team football with his parent club.

Oli was not happy at the amount of game time last season, and surely if Arsenal bring in even more competition then he is likely to be sidelined even further. With that in mind, it would appear that Lyon are keen on bringing him back to France to allow them to sell Lacazette, and the Lyon boss Jean-Michel Aulas has spoken to him personally about the possibility.

“There has been an approach, at some point, for Giroud,” Aulas was quoted as saying. “He is a boy that we like, who scores lots of goals and who has a lot of ambition for Russia [the 2018 World Cup].

“He told me personally that he wanted to take his time, that things were not completely defined with Arsenal, that he had a secret hope that he would be the number one striker next season.

“The key is Arsene Wenger. We are watching. We will try to very quickly sign a top European attacker.”

Obviously the only way Giroud will be Number One at Arsenal next season is if Alexis leaves, Danny Welbeck gets injured again, and Wenger fails to bring in a new striker. That is a lot of hope for Giroud to hold! But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen does it?
