Last season the writing was on the wall for Olivier Giroud as he started to gain a reputation as being a supersub at Arsenal, and his first team chances became even slimmer when Wenger went out and bought Alexandre Lacazette in the close season. Wenger offered the 31 year old the chance to leave and we know for a fact that Ronald Koeman was close to taking him to Everton. Before he was sacked Koeman said: “I had Olivier Giroud in the building. He would have fitted perfectly, but at the very last moment he decided that he’d rather live in London and stay at Arsenal.”
So he stayed, even knowing that he was unlikely to play very much. He has been in our second-string Cup teams, but has failed to actually start any of our League games. Now it seems he has been told by the France manager Didier Deschamps, that he is in danger of missing this summer’s World Cup if he doesn’t play first team football. “It’s clear that he is not getting enough playing time and Didier has already spoken to him about it,” the French assistant manager Guy Stephan told Telefoot. “He has to find a solution in the coming weeks.
“A departure? It is up to him. He’s been very good in the past [for France] and he’s played a lot of games and scored very important goals, so now he has to play.”
Giroud said he wanted to stay at Arsenal and win trophies, but that now looks very unlikely to happen, so could the Frenchman finally decide that playing in his last World Cup is more important to him now?
Everton still need a striker and he would be guaranteed to play every week….
