The latest Arsenal rumours are suggesting that Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona manager, is looking to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal rather then take over from Antonio Conte at Stamford bridge, and the reason given is that he would prefer the chance to have a long term project with the Gunners instead of the instant success demanded by Roman Abramovich at Chelsea. The Blues are hardly renowned for keeping their managers in situ for more than two or three seasons at a time.
Conte is expected to be moved on this summer, whereas Arsene Wenger is adamant that he will stay for at least one more season to ‘respect his contract’, but if the Gunners fail to make the Champions League once again Le Prof could be forced to step down in June.
But is Enrique the right man for Arsenal? The ex-Barca and -Real Madrid started his managerial career in 2008 with Barcelona B and, three years later, moved to Roma where he was unsuccessful in his only year in Italy. He then returned to Spain in the 2013–14 season and managed Celta Vigo for just one season again and took them to 9th place in La Liga, but he helped Barcelona to win the title by beating Real Madrid with Celta.
he then returned to Barcelona and despite a rocky start, he went on to win the ultimate treble of the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa Del Rey in his first year and the domestic double in his second. After only winning the Copa Del Rey (a hat-trick) in his final season, he then announced he would step down at the end of his contract, and decided to take a year’s break from football….
Now it seems he wants to come back next season to manage in the Premier league and you can’t knock a man that has won the Champions League. Maybe he is now ready to take up a long term appointment to bring Arsenal back to the top where they belong. The Gunners have already brought in Raul Sanllehi from Barcelona and perhaps he could be the catalyst to persuade Enrique to join our new project?
