Football fans have long memories and ever since Arsenal left Highbury and moved to our new Emirates stadium there have been quite a few painful points in those memories that we would like to forget but cannot, such as the 8-2 pasting we got at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2011.
However that was at the start of a season after a summer which had seen us lose Fabregas and Nasri and the Gunners rallied after that defeat and ended up finishing third, something that looks way out of reach right now after losing to West Brom and, more importantly, the feeble showing of the side at the Hawthorns.
So instead of our team going forwards as we expected it to do after the club’s financial burden was lifted and Arsene Wenger was given a decent transfer budget once more, we seem to be going backwards in terms of challenging for the Premier League title and if you don’t believe me then maybe you should believe the boss because he suggested the same after the latest defeat.
As reported by Metro the Frenchman said after the loss to West Brom that Arsenal are currently in the worst spell since he took over as manager, also declaring that his decision on whether to remain in the job would soon be revealed.
Wenger said, ‘I will announce my future soon.
‘You will soon know and very soon – you will. Don’t think I don’t worry about that.
‘We are in a unique bad patch that we haven’t had in 20 years. That’s more important than my future.’
Is this the worst shape and the toughest situation that Arsenal have been in for two decades? And will our ability to recover from it or not determine the future of the most successful manager in our long history?
