Is Wenger REALLY planning NO Arsenal transfers or being obtuse?

Arsenal fans are used to Arsene Wenger giving very little away when it comes to his dealings or intentions during a transfer window, so we would hardly expect the Frenchman to tell all and sundry which positions he is looking to strengthen this January or which players he has his eye on.

He does normally, however, come out with phrases like ‘we are working hard’ and ‘of course we are looking but it is difficult to find players of the right quality available’. This time the boss is not saying things like that but plainly suggesting that he feels that the squad is strong enough and he is not really planning any transfers, as his comments on the Arsenal website this week show.

Wenger said, “In our club, who is going out? Nobody at the moment. Who is coming in? Nobody. The best way would’ve been to get Cazorla back, to get Danny Welbeck back. Anyway, there is very little hope to find players of that quality in the January transfer market. So the best way to deal with that is to get our injured players back.”

Before the window opened the boss was also reported by Metro talking about his transfer plans, or lack of them.

He said, ‘Of course, because we have Lucas Perez, Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and we have plenty of options offensively.

‘Defensively, we are not in the need at the moment.’

I agree with him about our attacking options, especially now that Welbeck is almost ready to help us. I am not so confident about our defensive options or central midfield though. What if Bellerin picks up a knock for instance? Is Wenger really so happy with his squad options or is he just being obtuse and evasive about his transfer plans for Arsenal this month?
