Latest update on Arsenal’s pursuit of Serie A central defender

Arsenal are very keen on signing a central defender before the transfer window shuts in under a week but it is unlikely to be Dani Rugani of Juventus.

According to Charlie Watts at Goal.com, Arsenal tabled an offer for the 25-year-old on a two-year loan deal but the approach was rejected by the Italian Champions.

On top of that, Rugani himself is said not to be interested in leaving Turin and wants to stay and fight for a first-team place.

So, unless there is a dramatic change of heart by both Juve and Rugani, Arsenal will have to start looking elsewhere for a centre-half.

While it is disappointing that this particular deal is unlikely to happen it is positive that the club is making an effort to address the weakest part of the team.

Arsenal now possess one of the most formidable forward lines in the Premier League, they have also strengthened the midfield area but the defence continues to be a huge cause for concern.

There are high hopes that a deal for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney will be concluded this week so to some extent, the backline will be stronger than last season but Tierney is not enough.

There is still time for Arsenal to land a central defender and I am confident that they will.
