One position that Arsenal will be saving money on this summer

Saving money this summer is essential to Arsenal considering that they do not have the sort of transfer budget that their nearest rivals will be enjoying and it seems that is what they will be doing in at least one position.

Now that Petr Cech has retired it is essential that we have a keeper to replace him, either from within the squad or via the transfer market.

Well, according to reports today Emiliano Martinez is set to become Bernd Leno’s new back-up next season.

I had thought that David Ospina would be given that role but it seems likely that he will remain in Italy with Napoli where he had spent last season on Loan.

Martinez has been on loan with Reading and by all accounts had a decent campaign and it now appears he will be rewarded with the number two slot in the Arsenal first team.

The Argentine has been with us for nine years, however, he has made just six Premier League appearances over the past five seasons and now has an opportunity to challenge Leno directly for the number one spot.

At the very least he will be given ample outings in cup competitions, both domestically and in Europe.

This makes sense for both the club and player, it means we will not have to waste any money on acquiring a new keeper and it gives Martinez a great chance of establishing himself at the highest level.

I like what I have seen of the 26-year-old and as a fan, I am quite comfortable with Unai Emery giving him this break and prefer that the money be better spent on players directly in front of the goalie.
