Arsene Wenger has seen many thousands of successful and unsuccessful Arsenal players come through their careers and many of them have gone on to be coaches or managers after their playing careers were over. The most notable of course are Tony Adams, Thierry Henry, Denis Bergkamp, Marc Overmars, and the latest to be linked with replacing Wenger is Patrick Vieira.
When asked about Vieira as a possible successor, Wenger said: “He’s a guy who has the potential one day, yes,”
“He works in the moment in New York and he works for Man City. I’ve followed his managerial career. I think he does very well. But overall, after that, this Premier League is special, you know.
“You have to come in. There are plenty of former players who played here who have potential and the intelligence and the knowledge to do it. So there’s plenty of choice, don’t worry about that.”
Vieira is definitely gaining experience, and Henry himself is assistant manager with the Belgium national side has also been linked to take over and has said he could not turn down the chance. Wenger has been thought to favour Mikel Arteta who is working under Pep Guardiola right now, but which other ex-Arsenal players could come in?
Adams is considered to be a failure as coach despite his great leadership skills on the pitch, but Overmars and Bergkamp both had successful spells at Ajax before being sacked recently. Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been the boss at Feyenoord since 2015 and has won an Eredvisie with the club. Remi Garde won the French Cup with Lyon before failing miserably at Aston Villa.
So I think Henry and Vieira should be the favourites, but who would you choose?
