Should Arsenal challenge Man Utd for transfer of Chelsea’s Matic?

Central midfield, or the defensive side of it at least, has been a problem position for Arsenal for as long as some younger Gooners will remember. And for those of us lucky enough to0 have longer memories there is a feeling that the Gunners have still never found a good enough player to fill the considerable boots of the great Patrick Vieira.

Is it really a coincidence that Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since the combative Frenchman waved goodbye to north London after his last kick of the ball in an Arsenal shirt won us the 2005 FA cup in a penalty shootout against Man United?

To be fair to the current Arsenal squad, the likes of Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka have given Arsene Wenger better and more varied options than before in that position, but I would still say that none of the three have yet convinced me that they can help Arsenal to the EPL title.

One player who could do that, as he proved with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in their 2014-15 campaign, is the Serbian international star Nemanja Matic. According to a report in The Times the current Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is willing to sell him and his former boss Mourinho is being linked with a move to take him to Old Trafford, but I think that Wenger should at least try to hijack this transfer and bring Matic to north London.

What do you think Gooners? Should Arsenal try to sign Matic? Would he be able to help us to finally mount a title winning campaign?
