Should Arsenal keep our “British Core”?

Arsenal Boss says keeping British Core pivotal to Arsenal’s future – but is he right? by AT

As Arsenal move towards the finish of yet another lacklustre season, there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed. Perhaps the first issue that comes to mind are the futures of star players Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, and the future of the boss himself. However, another issue at hand is the status of the Gunners’ ‘British Core’, with Wenger stating that retaining these players is pivotal to Arsenal’s future.

As quoted by the Daily Telegraph, the Frenchman said: “We still have a group of young British players and we have to keep them all. We have Ramsey, Chamberlain, Wilshere, Gibbs. All these players, we have to make decisions and manage to keep them together.”

Now although it is quite a sentiment that these players have been at the club since a young age and that the boss entrusts the club’s future in their hands, the question that needs to be asked is whether any of these players are capable of handling the pressure and taking the club forward.

In my opinion, none of them have what it takes. While all of them did show great potential at one point or another, the club has to realize that they are not 18-year-olds anymore. Despite all of them being in the first-team picture for at least five years now, consistency is still a problem and as a result, our ‘British Core’ barely make it to the bench.

So with that being said, I think the focus should be on bringing in tried-and-tested world-class players rather than keeping faith in players who have had too long to make an impact in the team but have failed at doing so.
