Arsene Wenger has recently said that he currently has three world-class keepers at Arsenal in the form of Petr Cech, David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny, but obviously Szczesny has been out on loan at Roma for the last two years. The Pole was rapidly dropped by Wenger after some strange antics and dodgy performances, but he has regained his respect in Italy and is now lauded as one of the best in his position in Serie A.
Currently Szczesny is entering the last two years of his contract with the Gunners and if he came back it would be solely as a backup to Petr Cech, which is something he is not prepared to do as it would jeapordize his position in the Polish national side. As the President of the Polish Football Association, Zbigniew Boniek, revealed in March: “I went to dinner with Szczesny and he says that he would like to remain with Roma.
“If Wenger remains, I do not think he will return to London and more, he has a contract expiring in 2019 with the Gunners.
“At this point there are two possibilities: Arsenal bring him back or fix a figure.
“It is safe, however, 100% that he would like to remain in the capital.”
It is possible that Roma would like to keep him too, but now that manager Luciano Spalletti has left the club it would appear that Szczesny has been given freedom by Arsenal to speak to other clubs, and according to a report today from Calcio Mercato the Pole has already agreed personal terms with Juventus and is keen to move to the Champions League Finalists.
They also say that Arsenal have put a €20 million price tag on Szczesny’s head, which we would never have achieved when he went to Italy two years ago. It seems obvious that Szczesny has no interest in returning to play for Wenger, so is it time for the Gunners to cash in and let Szczesny finally leave?
