We all know that Arsene Wenger decided before the season started that Arsenal’s reserve keeper David Ospina would be given a starting spot in all the games in both the Europa League and the Caraboa Cup, and it looks like Petr Cech will be on the bench for both of Arsenal’s next two games against Ostersunds and Man City, but is that really the best decision for probably our most important game of the season?
Wenger has never won either of those two competitions, and he probably never thought that his reserves would get to either final, but with us getting knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle by Nottingham Forest this game against City at the weekend must surely be our very best chance of any trophy at all this season.
Cech himself has confirmed that he fully expects to still be on the bench at Wembley. He said: “I will be there supporting but I don’t expect to play. At the start it was clear that it was going to be like that,”
“It is always hard to watch any game from the bench or even from the stand if you are not selected.
“As a player, you always want to be involved. But obviously you are in a professional club where there are 25 top players and the manager always makes his choices for the game and you need to accept that.”
But should Wenger even be making decisions like that before the season starts without knowing if we would progress to the Final. Could he really stick with all the reserves that got us this far, or should he be playing his very best team?
