The clearout begins – Arsenal star set for medical next week

There has been much talk of Arsene Wenger making an overhaul of his ‘heavy’ Arsenal squad, and there have been rumours of up to 9 players leaving the Emirates this summer. One of those is David Ospina, who has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce for some time as he has had enough of being the permanent understudy to Petr Cech. It now looks like he will be the first Gunner to depart the club this summer.

When the link with the Turkish side was first revealed back in April, the Colombian keeper famously was quoted as saying: “Istanbul may be a new adventure and motivation for me. If my club are persuaded, it’s okay for me,”

Now it is being reported that Arsenal have come to an agreement with the Turkish giants, and Ospina will put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract with Fenerbahce. And when he returns to London from international duty with the Colombian national side, he will then apparently fly out to Istanbul to undergo his medical next week.

This is all well and good for Ospina, but then the question must be asked as to who will be the backup to Cech next season. The obvious solution is to recall the much-improved Wojciech Szczesny from Roma, although the Pole is also unlikely to be happy to return to the bench after two successful seasons in Serie A. It could be that Wenger may also cash in on Szczesny, and then we will be left with Emiliano Martinez as backup, and that is not such a bad thing is it?
