The youngsters yesterday were playing to save their Arsenal careers

It would appear that the new Arsenal manager has already been decided and as Ivan Gazidis said when he was discussing the criteria for Wenger’s replacement, he made it clear that promoting youngsters was one of the main reasons for the choice of new boss: “We have to go through that process.” Ivan said. “There is another value which I didn’t talk about which is young players. Our academy teams are doing extremely well and under the radar we have got a lot of players coming through into our first team, not just ones that you already know about but the next generation as well. So that value of giving youth a chance is also very important to the football club.”

Wenger also followed up that ideal before the game against United, and it looks like he picked a team of youngsters with the aim of letting the new guy assess their talents ahead of his arrival in the summer. Wenger made it clear yesterday when he said: “Look, my successor certainly will have watched this game today. Hopefully, he will come to positive conclusions for the players. For them, it’s whether they can be part of the future of Arsenal Football Club. I think some of them have shown today that they can be, 100 per cent. I would say, personally, 100 per cent.”

So it is no wonder that they played out of their skins, knowing that they were playing to impress the new manager and hope to still be at the club next season. And they certainly were impressive. Perhaps next season we will have a much younger starting line-up that can grow and learn together and become world superstars, but this could upset a large number of fans that are hoping the new boss will be given massive amounts to spend in the transfer market. It would seem he has already been told to work with the youngsters we already have at the club…
