Opinion – Time for some perspective as Arsenal prepare to take on Southampton

Arsenal will beat Southampton on Saturday, that you can take to the bank.

Reading some of the comments on here and elsewhere you would have thought Arsenal were not sixth and were in the relegation zone.

You would have thought it was Arsenal that conceded nine goals on their own turf against Leicester City, You would have thought it was Arsenal that was on -18 goals this season.

I mean, come on now.

Arsenal is having a bad season but only by their own standards, not by Southampton’s standard.

I acknowledge Arsenal lost a two-goal lead to the then bottom side Watford. lost away to Sheffield United and so on.

You would have to be blind not to have noticed the dull, lacklustre, boring performances that we have seen this season.

But please, let’s get some perspective for a minute.

Arsenal rarely loses at home in the Premier League, they have lost just once in their last 24 home games and drawn just six. Compare that to the two losses at home for Man City in their last 16 home games.

Of course, Arsenal cannot be complacent, Southampton does pose a certain level of danger. That I think we can all agree.

However, we are not talking about a team in any sort of decent form, we are not talking about a watertight defence, we are not talking about prolific goalscorers.

No, we are talking about a very poor team and even an underperforming Arsenal side should easily beat the Saints.

There are enough reasons for us to be negative as Arsenal fans but there has to be a limit surely. We cannot ignore the facts here. Compared to Liverpool we are definitely an average side. Compared to Southampton we are a top side.

I am 100% confident that Arsenal will beat Southampton and beat them easily. I do not ignore the mess we are in but I am looking at this with some degree of perspective. We are bad, we are not that bad.
