We should soon know for sure one way or the other if Arsene Wenger is going to be our manager again for next season. If he is though, it is looking increasingly as though it will be for one year instead of the two year contract that had been reported in the football media as being on the table.
The Frenchman may well fancy one more crack at getting it right and leading us back to the glory of being crowned Premier League champions but he must be aware that the Arsenal fans are losing patience and will surely be up in arms if we falter again next year.
It remains to be seen whether a successful season would see Arsene extend his stay further, but there is a good chance he may quit while ahead. I think that, assuming he does get another contract, one of the reasons the Arsenal board are willing to stick with the Frenchman is the need to find a suitable replacement and according to the former Gunner Paul Merson that person will be our old captain Patrick Vieira.
In a Sky Sports report Merson explains that the Frenchman who is currently managing New York City in the MLS would add some much needed grit and steel to balance the flair football we have under Wenger.
He said, “My instincts tell me he’s going to sign and he’s waiting for a big win and he’ll sign for another year.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays a year and then Patrick Vieira comes in.
“Yes. He’s learning his trade over at New York City, he’s been at Man City, and he brings a winning mentality, he won’t take any rubbish.
“Arsenal look too nice at the moment. I think that could happen and the fans would love that.
“The players don’t seem like they’re working that hard for the manager at the moment, which is sad.
“Whoever comes in it’s going to be a step-up – it’s a big, big football club but I don’t see a problem.
“He’s a legend, which gives you some leeway. I just think he’ll get his team playing the way he played the game, which is what they need at the moment.”
