Wenger challenges Arsenal star to fight for shirt

There are still tumbleweeds blowing around the Emirates stadium wait in vain for Arsene Wenger to use the club’s mountain of cash and bring in a player or two to help us achieve the very difficult task of competing with our big spending rivals for the Premier League title.

But still the only meaningful signing the boss has made is to bring Petr Cech from Chelsea, a transfer that is already starting to look as valuable as we first thought it would be before the Czech Republic international endure a debut to forget against West Ham.

But Wenger has suggested that our current number one may not have things his own way in the Arsenal starting line up, as he told Arsenal Player that our second choice stopper David Ospina has a good chance of challenging Cech for his place in the team.

While it was originally being reported that the Colombian international was ready to move on after we signed Cech, he has got his head around the situation well, perhaps because it was Wojciech Szczesny that Wenger wanted to go out on loan rather than him.

The Frenchman said, “He’s responded very well. David Ospina is a very strong man and a fantastic goalkeeper.

“He’s ready for the fight and will give Petr Cech a hard time. There will be enough room for him to play games as well, maybe sometimes to come in during the season.

“Why shouldn’t he be able to win his No 1 shirt back? That’s the target for him and I’m convinced he will fight for that.”

While Cech is playing well and Arsenal are struggling, however, I cannot see Ospina getting a chance in the Premier League, but he is likely to be called into action for the cup games and as the first one is away to our local rivals Tottenham, Ospina will have a great chance to make a name for himself again, as he did for most of last season. But can he really challenge Cech for top spot?
