Last season, there was much made of the rumours that Barcelona wanted to re-sign the Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin, especially as his whole family moved out of his London home en masse to return to Cataluña last winter. As the youngster had recently signed a very long term contract just months before, Arsene Wenger readily dismissed the rumours as just paper speculation.
But it would appear that the rumours were based in fact, as the BBCs David Ornstein revealed yesterday that Bellerin actually asked Wenger if he could move back to Spain this summer but Wenger once again refused to countenance any transfer talks with Barcelona.
Bellerin was brilliant in the right-back position the season before last, but he was not used quite so much by Wenger during the last campaign and after the Barcelona rumours re-emerged, Wenger left the defender on the bench for most of the second half of the season. So the question now arises as to whether Le Prof was punishing him for his disloyalty.
But where does this leave Bellerin now? Will he perform to the best of his ability if played this year and will Wenger now have to consider disposing of Bellerin in the near future if he no longer wants to play for the club? The same question could be asked about Mustafi and Sanchez, who also reportedly asked to leave this summer.
It would that Wenger will have an uphill task to get some of his players motivated this season, as was clearly shown by last week’s horrendous defeat at Liverpool….
