When will this criticism of Mesut Ozil ever stop?

Mesut Ozil is a coward claims German Bobic by Iomie

Every day there is further criticism of the Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, and now he has been called a ‘coward’ for his decision to retire from International football after a poor performance at the World Cup.

Özil was a member of the Germany squad that went out of the World Cup finals in Russia at the group stage and faced heavy criticism for his two appearances, with many believing he did not look interested and showed no desire to help the Champions progress into the next round.

It sounds very familiar for many of us who have constantly slated the midfielders desire and hunger in big games for the club, as his inability to show up when it matters most has become something of a regular occurance.

Anyways, Özil has blamed ‘unfair discrimination’ over his meeting with the Turkish president Tayyip Erdoğan in May for his decision to retire from international football.

And Fredi Bobic, the former Germany international and current sporting director of Eintracht Frankfurt, has ripped into the £350,000-a-week midfielder and admitted he retired in a ‘cowardly way.’

He told Bild: ‘I think that’s a bit cowardly.

‘Ozil’s criticism on social media, especially in the direction of the German Football Association (DFB), is unbearable.

‘This blanket charge of racism simply does not correspond to reality. He could have given an interview somewhere, live on TV.

‘For us footballers, the rule is “be a man and stand up”.’

Despite his recent troubles boss Unai Emery and a number of team-mates have stepped up and backed his decision to retire from International football, as it seems all the blame has been shifted away from just how poor the German squad were in Russia, and put on the shoulders of Ozil.

I just hope all the media attention doesn’t distract him from the fact he has a job to do here at the Emirates, and is pivotal to our quest to get back into the top four. Is it ever going to end?
