Arsenal have already brought in Bernd Leno this summer, despite already having David Ospina and Petr Cech as our usual keepers. It looks like Ospina will be the one to leave as he has not been included in Arsenal’s tour party that are flying to Singapore today, but Petr Cech, who was finally given the Number One shirt this summer, has gone on the plane along with Leno and Martinez.
But now it’s being reported that the Gunners are chasing another Bundesliga keeper with the Express reporting:
“Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a deal for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
The Gunners have already bolstered their goalkeeping department this summer by signing Bernd Leno.
But it seems with Petr Cech a target for Chelsea that Unai Emery is taking no chances as the new season approaches.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Arsenal are in “advanced talks” over taking Sommer to the Emirates.”
There have been reports of Chelsea being keen on taking Cech back to Stamford Bridge and today there are rumours of interest from Roma as well, but I am struggling to believe any of these! Cech is unlikely to be prepared to leave London, which is why he joined Arsenal in the first place, and as the Gunners legend David Seaman said: “I don’t think he will get written off straight away,”
“You don’t disregard that experience from a guy that has won everything in the Premier League and he has won the Champions League as well.
“Don’t disregard that. He has still got a lot to offer. What is interesting is that Petr has took the number one jersey.
“So that means that he wants to stay around for a little while.”
The big Czech only has one year left on his contract, and I see absolutely no reason to see why he can’t be our Europa League keeper and backup if Leno doesn’t settle in quickly. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start our first League games either. And how would bringing in another top keeper help Leno’s confidence either?
So no I really can’t see any truth in the Sommer rumours, especially if it is true that Barcelona want him!
