Sunderland v Arsenal preview, line up and score prediction

Sunderland vs Arsenal preview, match line up and predicted score line by KJ

Arsenal are back after the midweek international break (which included a MOTM performance by our very own Jack Wilshere). We go into this game after what was a hard-fought win against a defensively solid Stoke side who’s aim was to sit back and hope for the best.

This similarly will be a difficult game in my opinion. Sunderland have slowly improved their earlier form and are a difficult opponent at the Stadium of Light. They’ve recently signed Danny Graham who along with Steven Fletcher could potentially trouble Arsenal’s defence (who could possibly lack both Koscielny and Vermaelen).

We’ll have more possession and could potentially exploit Sunderland’s lack of a strong midfield. They have very strong attackers and hence are dangerous on the counter but if we dictate the game enough, they’ll fall into submission. Giroud will need to have a strong game to prevent the possibility of the home team dominating the game.

Line-up:
Szczesny
Sagna – Mertesacker – Koscielny (if fit) – Monreal
Arteta – Wilshere
Walcott – Cazorla – Podolski
Giroud

The line-up is pretty much our strongest at the moment without injuries.

Koscielny’s availability is the only real doubt which could really affect our performance and possibility of a win. If he isn’t fit, I can’t really stand the possibility of either Squillaci or Miquel filling in. I’d personally prefer shifting Arteta there for the game with Diaby/Coquelin in the midfield. We could however play Sagna as the centre back with Jenkinson filling in at right back.

This is definitely going to be a difficult game for Arsenal. But I think we can nick a 1 – 0 win.

Arteta in defence? What? You do realise his original position is attacking mid right…

And I doubt Kos will be fit.

A must victory today. Will be a bit tough. A glorious chance to put pressure on rivals vying for 3rd & 4th spot.

    Up Gunners!!!

The objective here must be to score more goals than the opposition as I can`t see the defence holding up. Myself I can see Wenger playing Sagna in the centre with Jenkinson at right back but he`d have is work cut out because Mert. is so slow. Who knows he may go for Monreal in the centre we don`t appreciate his talents as yet?

i see arsenal dominating possesion and determining the pase of the game. they have to however watch the opponent on the counter. the game would produce 3-2 in gunner’s favour

If you’re hoping for us to lose why are you even on this Arsenal FANS website posting that.
If that’s what you have to say please keep that to yourself, the rest of us FANS will post up more constructive comments.

I’ve been saying this for awhile now but I’ll repeat myself, if the players go out there and close down the opposition quickly and play the ball fast when in possession, we can beat Sunderland no matter who’s playing in defence attack or what ever. Its all about showing effort and grit to get the result, we have far too many players who give up so easily(hence why I don’t rate Gervinho, he gives up to easily)

The basic man/ball principles still remain. I don’t see why a Sagna or Jenks can’t move to a CB position. I know it is different not being able to use the lines and players come from a different angle but if you have the pace to stay with your mark then you should be all right to fill in a game or two.

    Few facts -

    1. sunderland are ranked 14th in possession at home with 43.5 % , so we would have a lot of possession.

    2. they have conceded average of 15 shots per game, so there would be lots of shots on goal from us. finishing will matter.

    3. mignolet has 4th best shots to save ratio and so he might frustrate us. goalkeepers usually have the best performance against us.

    4. they have major 4 injuries with 2 in defence and we might have a big game with 4 and 5 goals.

i think miquel deserves a chance if kosielney is out but keeping fletcher quite would be a big job.

If our attack is working hard, as it should, and being clinical with the opportunities created, the boy should simply out score Sunderland no matter who is paired with merti

Arsenal have a churning offense and a weak defense made weaker with injury problems and Admin predicts 1-0 for Arsenal – no goals against our likely makeshift defense and only 1 goal for the in-form Arsenal attack?

OK. It does not make sense to me but….. this is football. Could happen?

(I will go with 2-1 for Arsenal)

With Santos likely leaving I shall now dare to ask the question: What the heck happened to him.

He was never a great defender because he took too many risks. But he had many decent games last season in which he contributed positively and well.

Usually when you see something like this that is not injury-related it means he has some personal problems – marriage, homesick, angry with his club treatment, etc.

    Anyone have the inside scoop.

@Studz, Not many agree with you but I actually do. Diaby could provide cover for a missing CB, especially on set pieces with his height. I think it is an awesome idea.

Squillaci is nt really strong to get a hold of the center back pairing with PER, i think miguel would do better.

Wenger is full of surprises! He might try Nacho on Koscielny’s position, and start (you guessed it) Santos (even the poorest club wouldn’t bid for him in an auction).

Diaby holds the ball for so long and likes dribbling for him to be in the deffence. Lets have trust with the players who ply their trade there Miquel or sagna can do the magic. And the funs do their best. We will win this one.

Yes I’m also very skeptical of the admins on this site after the suggestion that Arteta, who is neither physically or positionally capable, should play as centre half against Sunderland.

arsenal 3, sunderland 1 is how the game is ending but i do pray koscieny passes the late fitness test. gooners agree

Dont agree wkith u admin, from what ive seen of miquel he is a good defender who is very competent with the ball at his feet, however he does take a risk and needs more experience, but in a game where we are likely to dominate he will be fine and he will have his experienced compatriot next to him in monreal, clean sheet today for the gunners

maybe we could promote some of the youth players at CDM perhaps or Diaby for 45 mins.Only i can think of is ignasi miquel there are about three games before Cl clash with bayern starting from today.(“bring him up-to speed”).

I thought Diaby was injured? I would happily settle for a 1.0 to the gunners, clean sheet and Giroud to score! And @Talib, cheer up mate, the battle is not over yet!

I dont care about the scoreline as long as we win. A hard fought 1-0 or 2-1 is alright for me but what I don’t wanna see is complitely wasted chances as we are still +4 behind Chelsea’s goal difference.

If we use attack as our defence, and play with confidence and aggression, then I see us winning 3-1. Sunderlands home record is evens. They have won 4, drawn 4 and lost 4.

I may be deluded, but a handsome win is in order..

We’ve got a chance to qualify through the champions league if we keep winning all our matches and if Tottenham , Chelsea and Everton lose their matches this weekend we’ve got a chance to get a 4th place spot. If we don’t win and Liverpool win on Sunday they will catch us up.

A STRONG OFFENCE IS A STRONG DEFENCE!!! in my opinion if we are worried of conceding because of our weak defence, then we better out score sunderland out of this match our attack has no injuries lets score 5 if we’re afraid of conceding 2 or 3….. as long as we get the 3 points. crucial weekend spuds could drop points to newcastle!!!

We normally start slow so sunderland will come in at us strong to break us down fast and score a goal and defend their hearts out we will need to be vigilant and in form to have the ball and hold it well and score first so sunderland game plan falls to taters straight away if we can do that we should win the game comfortably

    0-1 to the Arsenal.

    Podolski

Expecting a hard fought game. Sunderland will play their usual defensive game and deny space. We’ll find it tough to make chances but I think we’ll get a couple of good ones and take one of them.

    Newcastle level!

Jeez. Just read the Arteta at CB recommendation!

No way. He’s far too small for one and has NEVER played in defence before.

If Kos isn’t fit, then Jenks at RB and Sagna can just about play there (CB). Miguel is also an option.

Sagna seems better in CB. Per better as the commander in defense.
