Why are the fans and media always so hard on Arsenal?

Media and fans are being too hard on Arsenal by Adewole Oluwafemi Peter

Morning Gunners all over the world, I am still of course enjoying the pleasure of our great victory yesterday, right now I am so excited and I trust am not the only one..

Over the years, It is widely believed among many Arsenal fans that the media and the so called expert analysts and pundits are somewhat biased and partial in their analysis and criticism of Arsenal. Many believe they love to ‘whisper’ our success and ‘amplify’ our failures. Many ex-players failing to say the truth about their former clubs while always ridiculing Arsenal. I remember a certain Owen saying Sterling is better than Ozil..really???

That has always been the norm in England over the years and this season, it continues…
Take a look at Liverpool, City and Spurs seasons.

Liverpool is one of the most inconsistent teams in the PL, before Klopp and even under Klopp. How many finals have they played, how many did they win?? They loses to small teams regularly, in fact they was dumped out of the FA cup at HOME by Wolves and they were not overly criticised…why? We literally handed the CL spot to them as a gift, if not, they wouldn’t have made it.

Now Spurs, on the other hand, were in the CL they were knocked out in the group stages and got relegated to their favourite competition, the Europa League. Once again they got knocked out of the EL by a mediocre team and guess what happens? Everyone still praised them for their fake title challenge and all that, now imagine if it was Arsenal…

I am not saying we are perfect, far from that, but what I am saying is that we have a better season overall. Yes we didn’t make the top 4 but all the top teams have also missed out before and we are still the most consistent in making the CL.

My kid brother who is a Liverpool fan says he would prefer to win trophies here and there instead of making the CL knowing fully well that they can’t win the CL for now. I am sure some of these rivals would rather have what we have now. But yet, there is one million dollar question I still wanna ask;

Why are we ignored when we do well and we are quickly termed a club in crisis when we have a blip? Is there an agenda against Arsenal?

  1. It’s up to us to silent the critics.

Off topic, but Guardiola probably has spent more in the last 16 months on plyaers than he did in his 3 seasons at Bayern.

£90m in the first week of window, £45m of which for an unproven goalkeeper.

  2. The answer to your Question: Ask Millwall….
?No one likes us, No one likes us, No one likes us, we don’t care?

Maybe it’s because Wenger was the overseas manager to win the premier league? And being French didn’t help either

Maybe it’s because Arsenal broke a lot of records in the first decade of Wengers career?

Maybe it’s because Arsenal went a whole season undefeated?
    (49 games)

Maybe it’s because Wenger introduced sexy fluent attacking football to the league?

Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner & I love London Town ?? on second thoughts, Fork knows.. I give up! ??

  3. You’re spot on it’s always been that way and I’ve been a supporter since 1960. But I don’t give a toss because form is temporary and class is permanent and The Arsenal has plenty of it. I think it’s jealousy, we have never been relegated since we entered the top flight in 1919 (the only club), unbeaten in a full season (in fact 49 games) and now hold the record number of FA cup wins. Spurs always get good press and they haven’t won the league for 56 years and the FA cup for 26 years so I just feel sorry for them. The reason why ex Liverpool players hate us is 1989, especially Lawro and Hansen who actually played in that game. So it’s lovely when we prove them wrong, especially Merson who now appears to be a Chelsea supporter, good riddance.

  4. I think all this talk about the press and media hating us is a load of bollox.
Up until yesterday our season has been pretty dire and look at the media and newspapers hailing our win as a classic final and Wenger having come up with a master plan. Owen is a twat and should never be a pundit and I agree that has no love for our team but he is just one person. Ignore him, he is a failed injury prone has been. Shearer had critical things to say about us recently and deservedly so but he is certainly singing our praises today, loud and clear.
As for calling spuds a fake title challenging team, well they could have won it and certainly played great football this season and were better than us in the league which hurts me to admit.
We are not hated Goonerboy. I just think you are being a little sensitive.
    Peace and Love.

  5. The reason so many pundits like Liverpool is because prior to the Premier League era, they were the most successful club in England. They flew the flag in Europe, and had some of the most loved footballers in the country for a long time (EG. John Barnes, Stephen Gerrard). Also Liverpool won the Champion’s League in 2005 under Benitez, and that was an extremely memorable game that fans of all teams remember. I agree they haven’t actually been that good under Klopp, and I don’t think they ever will be, because Klopp is over-rated, but football pundits love Liverpool for their history.

Some of England’s most popular players; Glen Hoddle, Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne – All played for Tottenham. Also some of the most popular international players like Ozzie Ardiles and David Ginola also played for the Spuds (And of course Hoddle, Lineker and Ginola are all pundits now). Although they haven’t been that successful during the last few decades, British culture always liked a charismatic under-dog, and Tottenham have certainly been that over the years.

So in response to the article, that’s why Liverpool and Spurs get an easy time in the media. Probably harder to understand if you’re under 40 years old and didn’t grow-up in Britain though.

By contrast when Man Utd were struggling under Moyes and Van Gaal they got hammered by the media. So did Chelsea during their difficult times recently. So Arsenal don’t get singled-out or treated any more harshly than most other teams. It’s just that our manager likes to whine about it more than others.

Man Utd and Chelsea respond by strengthening themselves and coming back fighting to win major trophies. Arsenal should do the same.

  6. Th writer is right. There is a hatred of Arsenal that filters down to even the referees. I cannot say for sure why that is but my gut tells me that there are many reasons for that. For example, people have always felt that Arsenal is that one team that extracts maximum funds from its season ticket holders but doesn’t give back enough through investment in the best players. That is one good reason to be mad at them. There is also the fact that Wenger is French and prioritized signing French players over English players for many years. Arsenal is after all an English club. So folks used to be mad about that too and probably still are. And then of course is the Wenger factor. For all his brilliance, Wenger can be absolutely annoying. For a man of his talents, he has under performed for quite a while now in the transfer window, tactical set up in certain games, playing players out of position, failure to beef up the squad in certain areas and player favoritism. Teams will kill to be in the champions league. Arsenal on the other hand played champions league football for 20 straight years and never gave its best to win the damn thing. I think a culmination of all these factors just made people hate us. That can all change if Kroenke and Wenger leave because a lot of this anger is directly because of them. I am not saying they should leave. I am just trying to give reasons why people hate us.

    1. I don’t get that explanation… Wenger’s failings as a manager make Arsenal fans hate him, not fans of other teams.

Also lots of Premier League teams field mostly foreign players. It’s been the case for ages. In fact with Arsene sticking with players like Wilshere, Walcott, & Gibbs, buying and fielding players like Wellbeck & Holding, and of course his long-standing love affair with Welshman Aaron Ramsey, it could easily be argued that he’s been promoting English/British players more than most top-six managers.

And when it comes to criticising officials (And everyone else) I would say Moureen is probably referee’s enemy No.1 in that department.

  7. Don’t be rediculous, we are not hated. It’s called jealousy, jealous of our success, because we ARE successful. We just won the cup for the third time in four years. Let’s stop all the negativity please.
    Peace and Love
