Arsenal can STILL miss out on Champions League!

Arsenal still have a lot of work to do! by DN

Although it would be quite a blow for Arsenal to finish fourth now after the position we have got ourselves into, it would still mean that the Gunners were once again in the Champions League next season. It would mean two play-off games that we could really do without but you know that we would take them rather than being in the Europa League with all the problems those Thursday night games seem to bring.

A lot of Arsenal fans seem to assume that we are already certain to be in the big European competition next season but with five games left to play there is still a lot of work to be done. I don´t know if you noticed but Man City finished the weekend having gone above Arsenal into second and they play again before our next game which is away to a Hull City battling relegation and having won at the weekend.

It is not unrealistic to assume that City will beat the Spuds on Sunday and if Man United beat West Brom at home and Liverpool win their two games against Hull and QPR, we could travel to the KC stadium on Monday night in fourth place, thee points behind City, one behind United and just one ahead of Liverpool. We would have games in hand but it just shows you that the Gunners are far from secure, especially with a trip to Old Trafford in one of our final games.

Having said that fellow Gooners, and I don´t mean to bring you down, I do not expect us to slip up and I would say we are still favourites for second spot, as long as Wenger can keep the players focused. Where do you see Arsenal finishing?

  1. No way we will miss out on champion’s league bro.. Its our league .. There is no champion’s league without Arsenal..

  2. its not over yet…mathematically…

but we should seal off the top 3 spot and stop wasting time in playoffs…

  3. Let’s see……..

    1. Arsenal are playing like the current best team in the EPL.
    2. Arsenal have a reasonably favorable schedule remaining.
    3. Arsenal have a mostly healthier squad (Ox is the only big loss).
    4. Arsenal are in good table position – even on points with 2nd place Man City
    5. Arsenal still have a game in hand over most big rivals for the CL spots – City, Spuds and ManU. (Only LPool also has 5 games remaining and they currently look like sh#t)

Sure that all adds up to big trouble.

  4. Chelsea has won the title
with 5 games to go so the sting
has gone out of the title race.
Arsenal will easily get 2nd which leaves
City and Utd to avoid the play off spot.
    Liverpool Spurs and Southampton
    fight for the nobody league.
The relegation battle is more interesting now.
No English team even made the ECL 1/4ers
and only Arsenal of the top 10 is in the FA cup final.
There is no international tournament in the summer.
Most fans in the top 12 are already sacking the
deadwood and identifying our summer targets 🙂

    1. there is copa america in summer, and probably sanchez could be unavailable for the fa cup final

      1. Where do you get that piece of information? There is a lot of respect for our manager and not many national team coaches would want to offend him. So I believe Sanchez will be around for the FA final.

    1. We need 4 points from 5 games to clinch 4th place. Because of goal difference, 3 points is probably enough (only Southhampton close enough to win a tiebreaker). Indeed, if Liverpool, Spurs and Southhampton all fail to win all of their remaining games (a likely scenario) than 2 points would clinch and even 1 point could be enough.

Hence, the headline of this article is rather silly. As are the irrelevant statements about City and United playing before us next weekend.

  5. Who needs Adrian Durham, Paul Scholes, Michael Owen when we have you. Still look on the bright side if that happens we lose Wenger this end of season rather than seeing his contract out.

  6. Well I am not worried about top 4 to be honest. but we need to work for the second spot, and it is achievable, if Welbeck does not play or even appear on the substitute bench.

  7. Didn’t hear the Greater Portuguese Gob scream when Cahil d one Ramsey on the touchline.
nfortunate collision our goalkeeper with their player or retribution.

  8. @zalalem I think you’re being a bit harsh on welbeck (guy who scored the winner against manure) he’s not the greatest but he does his best and I’d rather him on the right than Ramsey

  9. Liverpool can get a total of 73. We are already on 67. We need 2 wins from 5 games to secure CL. Liverpool have Chelsea and Stoke away during their remaining fixtures – we have Man Utd. The chance of us slipping into 5th is very low. A win in our next game will celebrate St. Totteringham’s Day so Liverpool are the only threat.

As for finishing above fourth as long as we continue to play well we only have to win 4/5 games to guarantee 2nd or 3rd with City only having to draw or lose to mean we get 2nd. We can finish 3rd by winning 3/5 games as long as one of the wins is against United. All in all when we’re talking about less then a 50% ratio to get top 4 across 5 games I don’t think it’s a huge pressure and shouldn’t be our focus. We need to look at City and United – not at Liverpool.

  10. The little boy inside me says two things
    1. The writer is a prophet of doom.
    2. Wenger likes fourth place since the play off generate more revenue and opportunity to get ready for the season.

  11. I know its in the DNA of every Arsenal fan to be pessimistic but this is beyond ridiculous. The only big game we have left to play is United and we’re the form team in Europe. You cannot expect the team to lose the remaining 5 matches.

    Get a grip.
