Arsenal Gossip – Draxler Rumours won’t go away

The Draxler saga continues!

Julian Draxler is a player that all Arsenal fans will be well aware of nowadays, with the German international being continuously linked with the Gunners for the last few years at least.

Every time the transfer window opens up, I can guarantee you that there will be a rumour about Draxler to Arsenal, but even after three years at least, there still seems to be no definitive movement from the player to the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger was reportedly first interested in Draxler when he was hitting the heights as a teenage winger at FC Schalke. The Gunners supposedly turned down the opportunity to sign the German, before he then made the move to fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, the current club with which he plys his trade.

It was reported in the summer just gone that Arsenal had entered negotiations with Wolfsburg over the sale of Draxler, but when the Gunners were quoted with a price in the region of £40 million, Arsene Wenger again decided to look elsewhere. However this week alone has seen a rather dramatic turn of events in the long running saga, with Wolfsburg going back on a statement today that they only made on Tuesday.

The club statement from Sporting Director Klaus Allofs last Tuesday suggested that Wolfsburg may be open to the sale of their star man up front, if the right offer is made. But today Allofs has supposedly gone back on his last statement, by telling the media that the club has no intention of letting Draxler leave.

‘It is wrong to think we are looking to sell him. We are not planning to sell anyone. The most important thing is that the impression that Julian wants out disappears. He wants to do everything within his powers to be successful at Wolfsburg. There is absolutely no reason to even talk about Julian leaving in January. I am convinced Julian will not repeat his comments from last summer.’

It’s a strange turn of events on a rumour that just keeps on giving. Allofs states that he wants the rumours to go away, but surely with his latest comments it’s just fuelled the fire even more for the media.

In my opinion Arsenal would be signing a fantastic player for both now and in the future, if Wenger got hold of Draxler. He is a player of many talents and his ability to play in a number of positions including as a striker or as a winger is a fantastic attribute. However Arsenal don’t really need a Draxler type of player right now, with more than enough players already competing for a place on the wing. We’d certainly be adding quality to our ranks, but one player or another is going to lose out as a result and so Draxler just isn’t a player that the Gunners desperately need right now.

  1. since his 2011 Draxler has had just 24 league goals playing 148 games..

If we want an improvement on the Left Wing it ll be someone that can get the 24 league goals in 38 games.

Draxler goal ratio is too poor to be seen as an upgrade for Arsenal.
