Arsenal injury update and team news ahead of Sheff Weds game

There was a massive furore when Arsene Wenger used David Ospina in Arsenal’s must-win Champions League tie against Olympiakos, and our French manager hinted that our Number 33 may have needed a rest to deflect criticism, but Wenger has no hesitation in putting Cech as the first name on the teamsheet for the Capitol One Cup game tomorrow night.

It may be a bit cynical of me to suggest that David Ospina’s “shoulder injury” should happily come in the month that Arsenal have to face Bayern Munich home and away, and he is expected to recover after the next international break, but in the meantime Wenge has made it clear that Cech will face Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow as the Gunners aim for a spot in the Quarter-Finals.

In the pre-game injury update Wenger said: “There are no new problems from Saturday, Per Mertesacker is available again after illness. Nobody else is coming back. Arteta will not be fit. Ramsey, Wilshere, Welbeck and Rosicky of course are all out too.

“Ospina is still out too, so Cech will certainly play.”

It is pretty certain that Mertesacker will play after missing out on Saturday, but who else makes up the back line is unlikely to be known until tomorrow. If Wenger intends to give his reserves another chance after disposing of Tottenham in the last round, I could see Chambers playing alongside Per, with Gibbs and Debuchy on the flanks.

And of course, Matthieu Flamini at centre-forward!
