Arsenal targeting Hungarian teenager as possible replacement for Granit Xhaka

Arsenal scouting RB Salzburg youngster Dominik Szoboszlai as Granit Xhaka replacement.

Arsenal seems to be planning for life without Granit Xhaka after the Swiss midfielder fell out with the club’s fans.

Xhaka has been out of the side since his falling out with the fans against Crystal Palace and he may have played his last game for the Gunners.

Reports from the Daily Mail claim that the Gunners have been scouting RB Salzburg star, Dominik Szoboszlai as a replacement for Xhaka.

Szoboszlai has been one of the impressive members of the Salzburg side that have lit up the Champions League and Austrian Bundesliga this season.

Szoboszlai has played 16 games for them in all competitions this season and he has netted four times.

His form has attracted the attention of Europe’s top sides, but Arsenal is hopeful that the promise of more playing time would help them get his signature ahead of his other suitors.

The report claims that the Gunners have made the 19-year-old one of the candidates who could take Xhaka’s spot in their team.

Xhaka has been left disappointed with the way the club handled his problem with the fans and appeared to have been angered that he was stripped of the captain’s armband.

It has to be said that Salzburg has that look of Ajax last season in terms of a very exciting young side giving the big boys a serious run for their money.

Put it this way, Arsenal could do a whole lot worse than signing one or two of these huge talents.

  1. Looks good, but can’t they buy someone from EPL? It’s been a long time since Arsenal bought a premium EPL player

A lot of money has been wasted in vain to purchase foreign flops such as Ozil, Mustafi, Xhaka, Sokratis and Pepe. Some of the foreigners became excellent buys like Sanchez and Cazorla, but wouldn’t it better to pay a little bit more for an EPL footballer to avoid incompatibility?

Besides, we already have a lot of young talents who are eager to seize their spots in midfield, such as Maitland-Niles, Smith-Rowe, Willock and Burton. Arsenal had better give each of them at least five competitive matches first, before deciding to replace them with someone from abroad

    1. ozil, mustafic, sokaratis and pepe flop?

what were you watching in their first few seasons?

or you rather pay 150m and get zaha?

      1. @John Ibrahim

Mustafi – massive flop, especially when you factor in the fee paid

Sokratis – minor flop, didn’t cost a lot, and started well for us, before tailing off

Pepe – huge flop thus far, especially when you factor in the fee paid. Unfair to judge at this point though, as he hasn’t even been here 6 months.

Ozil – a flop of sorts. Only one season in six, we could truly say he was world class. Disappointing considering the fee paid, and even worse when you take into account his pay raise, and form before, and after the contract extension.

Xhaka – you didn’t mention him, but gotanidea did. Again, a huge flop. I’d rather see Denilson playing for us again, than Xhaka.

I’d have to agree with gotanidea on this.

  2. That’s not racist. He’s not necessarily chosen the right examples to flag up as disaster buys in the past but suggesting we give ‘our young players’ the opportunity ahead of buying also unproven young players with EPL potential ahead of what we already have completely defeats the object of us having an academy or youth policy.
If we are desperate to buy a replacement there are players already in the EPL, regardless of their nationality, much better than Xhaka playing for teams like Sheffield United, Wolves and understand our league. It’s a completely different beast to other European leagues. Regardless spending money to replace Xhaka when our problem lies in the heart of our defense is the more stupid action.

  3. How was gotanidea racist?

Buying players within English league would most likely still mean buying foreign players, given that most of the players in our league are foreign, especially the top quality ones.

  4. yeah whatever…..whoever player we buy will become a joke when they come to Arsenal right now. Why? Because our head coach does not have a plan. Miserable defending, no control in midfield. Player played out of position. Our head coach trying so hard to be clever but in reality he was not so clever.

Conclusion: MIGHTY ARSENAL must sack our HEAD COACH

  5. We need a dm , get dacoure or similar he will run, mix it up in the middle and get that defence protected!! And then we need 2 long term cb ‘s, players with legs not older players from foreign leagues.

  6. I don’t get all the speculation about who we should and should not buy. The main thing is to get Emery gone before we look at new recruits as a lot of our existing players will piss off if Emery isn’t sacked very soon. It’s apparent from the word on the street that he has totally lost the dressing room and the likes of Laca and Auba want out if Emery stays!

    1. Totally agree about emry. He has swapped and changed due to the performances of the experienced players but that also comes from him as he doesn’t actually know what and how to play a system and stick to it. Also the system he wants to play ie. play out from the back, we simply don’t have the players to do it. It’s having an effect through performances and more worryingly it has started effecting the young lads that Freddie has done so well with!! 😩😩😩😩😩

  7. I watched him very carefully in the recent international against Wales. He was playing in an attacking no 10 role and although he did not make a huge impact on the game he ticks most of the boxes as an attacking midfielder. The trouble is we are screaming out for a top quality defensive midfielder which along with a CB must be our priorities. The young Hungarian is a real talent who would lighten up the Emirates and he would be a sound investment for the future.
