Arsenal to hijack deal for Man United star

Although Arsenal have three top central defenders in Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker, the general feeling is that with suspensions and injuries the Gunners could really do with one more talented centre-back. The young Calum Chambers was used early on last season as cover, but his immaturity and propensity to get silly yellow cards saw him drop out of contention in the second half of the season, and it would appear that Wenger is more keen on using him on the right flank.

Well, according to today’s Mirror, Arsene Wenger is set to hijack West Brom’s bid for the experienced Man United defender Jonny Evans. The Baggies are reported to be stalling over the £10m valuation that United want for the out-of-favour 27 year-old. It has been suggested that Arsenal are willing to pay that price for the Northern Irish international to give them more options at the back.

Evans has been given few chances by Louis Van Gaal, having played just 14 League games last season, and he was roundly criticised by Van Gaal after he received a six-match ban following a spitting duel with the Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse last season.

There is no guarantee that he will get to play more if he comes to the Emirates, but he is certainly tough and knows how to win, after winning three Premiership titles under Alex Ferguson.

Who thinks that Evans is a good buy at that price?

  14. Let’s be honest, wenger does have a persistent record of buying United garbage . He bought silvester and Danny welbeck for 16 mill who scored 4 prem goals. 4 better than former postman Sanogo in a arsenal shirt. Had wenger added 10 mill on that 16 mill he would probably have got a cf that would have scored 20 prem goals along side girouds 13 goals alongside sanchez 17 prem goals which would equal prem title.

    1. I’m sorry since when did you people have a direct line to Arsene to know all about his transfer dealings. A week ago the papers had you believing we signed Vidal, how naive and stupid do you have to be to realise the papers fabricate stories so they can sell… If we were going to sign a defender for 10mill why not Virgil Van Dyke who’s buy out clause is 8.5 mill… i don’t think wenger would be that stupid to sign evans over Van Dyke.

    2. Quantity doesn’t necessarily equal Prem title.

      We could go out there and buy ourselves a flat track bully who’d score 10 of his 20 goals against teams in the bottom four, and go missing against Chelsea and anyone else with a highly organised or physical back four. It’s not just the numbers that count; it’s getting goals when they’re desperately needed. That’s one of the true hallmarks of champions.

      Of course, I’m not suggesting that signings like Danny Welbeck are going to win us the title. I’m suggesting that the attacker we (may) bring in should have the talent to pull something out of the hat against virtually anyone. OG may well have scored 20 goals had he played 35 matches last season, but he has fluffed a lot of chances against tight defences. This is precisely what we’d hope to avoid — another player who rarely steps it up against top Prem opposition.

  20. Wenger really needs to go all out for the title this time. He doesn’t have much time left. Let’s get Schneirdelin and put a bid for either Dzeko or Jovetic. We have no time for games.
