Arsenal’s defensive worries are easing at last…

Arsenal have been a bit short on defenders so far this season, with Monreal, Kolasinac, Maitland-Niles, Sokratis and Mavropanos all having time in the treatment room along with captain Koscielny. Thankfully Monreal recovered reasonably quickly and Kolasinac is now back and Maitland-Niles has also returned to training this week. Sokratis should be able to play next week, Mavropanos is expected back to training in a couple of weeks, and the latest is that Koscielny has also rejoined the squad, but the boss says it will still be some time before he can play. Emery told Arsenal.com: “He is very important for us because he is our captain,” he said. “He is starting this week to do some training with us together and it is very, very good news for us.

“I think we need also to give confidence to him, to be close with us, because it was a big injury. But now he is getting better, he is training with us in some things and this is very positive.

”We need to be calm with him. Calm because we need after more than a month, [him to] feel first he is doing some things well, and then when he can play and do games in the training, we can think he is OK to play.”

With all our other defenders coming back there is no need to rush Koscielny back onto the field, but if he available for the second half of the season and used sparingly he could play a big part as we hopefully close in on winning some titles, as will all our other defenders! 🙂

  1. Actually Arsenal have been winning without Koscielny

When he played with Mertesacker, he was usually the one that blew the offside traps and made errors. But many fans blamed Mertesacker instead, because Mertesacker is slow and Koscielny’s aggressive defending style is more attractive than the BFG’s

The problem is Mustafi has similar style, hence it’s not good to pair them too often, as what we have seen last season. Sokratis seems to be a better partner for them

  2. Wow. Good news. Him patnered with Holding and we good.our defence isnt good. We are conceeding too much compaired to the other top ten teams. We need to improve on that.
OT :: why dint we ever get Mahrez? He was available to us and pushed for it at a lesser amount Mancity bought him. He would be a good winger now that we have none for left wing.
I regretted alot when he joined citeh coz i wanted him hete

    1. Mahrez was too expensive for Arsenal and he is a left-footed right winger, which is difficult to find the consistent one

His four goals in eight EPL appearances sound good, but he plays in a pretty established system and most of the goals are not the opening goal. In my opinion, Salah contributed more to his team, because he often made Liverpool steal the first goal

I’d prefer Arsenal to gamble on a younger and more energetic right winger like Adama Traore or Ismaila Sarr. Or give Nelson a chance, because he played well in pre-season

        1. I watched him when I followed Barcelona during Luis Enrique’s tenure

He is like a raw diamond that needs to be polished. He has a huge talent and courage like Mbappe, but he needs good manager like Emery, Guardiola or Klopp to bring the best of him

          1. I only said that because you’re the only who regularly mentions him on here. I did think he was good against us when he played for Middlesbrough (the 0-0 at the Emirates) he is a big unit ?

            1. I also checked him out when Gotanidea mentioned him. He skips past his markers like Lucas Moura and surges forward with that never ending power of Oxlade Chamberlain. Problem is everyone including fans of his own club seem to agree he has no end product. Gervinho’s name always pops up when talking about Adama Traore..

  3. OT
    this weekend.
Henri now manager of Monaco in the footsteps of his mentor Arsene Wenger, has his first game in charge and it is against Strasbourgh for whom Arsene played.

  4. I see no reason why arsenal can not buy Zaha of crystal palace. The guy is frustrated where he is and better than some of these overrated and over paid players you guys always mention.

  5. OT:I just finished watching Villarreal vs athletico Madrid,oh little santi he played the full 90minutes as what a player he is,I miss him so much, carzola with torrera and xhaka, one can only imagine what will happen with auba and laca upfront

  6. Aren’t the 5 defenders of: Bellerin, Mustafi, Holding, Monreal and Kolasinac out of the B defenders at Arsenal that are fit for selection to play against Leicester on Monday night? Sokratis is very short term injury concern. He could be back in contention for three Sporting CP away match or for C Palace away match too. But AMN has not been declared fit to play by the Arsenal medical center. Mavropanos looks a bit far from playing and Koscielny too is much far off to play for Arsenal this season. So, I don’t think Arsenal defensive worries are easing off as such when it’s their 5 – 6 defenders out of their 8 defenders that are often available to play week in week out since our last Man City game at the Ems when injury was suffered to AMN.

  8. Really?Chelsea’s defence was among the top 2/3/4/5 and were breached by MU.
Why?Basically the Blues intricate passing like Wenger in front of a fortress is a recipe
for a fast counter attack. Its pass after pass and the merry go round in front of the
box with no gaps to exploit for shooting. The defenders have more or less sealed up
the room for a goal to be scored.
If Emery plays like Wenger he will vulnerable to the predatory instincts of Vardy and company.
I would dearly love to see Arsenal carry on winning. A draw would suffice so the
gunners can start another run with a win over Pool looming in the background.

    1. Why would you believe a draw will suffice? We are playing a mid-table team in Leicester so we should be thinking of nothing other than a win.Emery just needs to keep the players believing and play Ozil at No10 with Ramsey nowhere near the starting line up and we have far too much for Leicester.Same with Palace next week before the real test against Liverpool. Two more wins in the Premiere League before playing them should have us full of confidence.

  9. Phil,
I would dearly Arsenal to win. The reason the law of averages. The gunners are due adraw/defeat
anytime now. Of course the epl is unlike the other Euro leagues where only 1/2 or at most 3 dominate and and win most/all the time. Lately there seems to be a change in Germany and Spain.
Underrate LC at your peril. I would like to see the gunners go direct instead of the predictable passing game.
A sudden shot could ricochet off a defender/goalpost and the ball can be in the net.
