Big summer transfer already secured by Arsenal? Goodbye Gabriel?

There was not much transfer action for the Arsenal fans to get worked up about during the January window, but now that it is over we have Metro reporting a big Arsenal transfer rumour and claiming that the Gunners may already have secured a big signing for the summer.

If this latest bit of Arsenal gossip turns out to be true then I think it could be bad news for our Brazilian defender Gabriel, as the big money signing of the Greece international Kostas Manolas from the Italian club AS Roma could spell the end of his playing career at the Emirates.

While Gabriel has been playing at right back for us of late, he is only filling in and his main position at centre back would be hard to get into if Manolas signs for Arsenal. We4nger has already taken up the option of another year for Per Mertesacker and with Koscielny and Mustafi in front of the German and with Rob Holding and Calum Chambers it is hard to see where Gabriel would fit in.

I do have my doubts about this rumour, like all of them, especially when you see the money being talked about as nearly £50 million, but Manolas is one of the top rated defenders in the world and if the price was a little bit less which it could well be as the contract situation with his current club is said to be the reason for the move, then maybe it could happen.

What do you think Gooners?

  1. Where does Manolas leave Kostafi?
Both penned deals in the last six months.
Although Kostas is a classy centre half I personally rate, I think we should focus on the squad we have now and the games ahead.

    1. This rumour is absolute rubbish, as it has no substance to it. As you have already pointed out, Mustafi has only just joined us for a huge fee, and Koscielny has only just extended. Both are first choice players, as is Manolas, and even more so as he will cost a lot. Three into two doesn’t go, unless one of the Kostafi partnership is leaving.

    2. Injuries, suspensions, fatigue, rotation. 4 good reasons to have 3 top quality center backs. Let’s not forget Koscielny turns 32 in September. Some defenders might deteriorate quickly, some slower. Manolas also represents tall but dynamic front of CB’s (Manolas is taller than Kosc but really quick too). He would be a top quality signing.

However, I agree that it’s a bit early to talk about transfers.. We still got a chance to win the FA Cup, and that’s the only possible beacon of light from this season to look forward to.

  2. Metro is the most unreliable source for transfers, but in this let’s entertain the idea of all sources from Metro being true. Allegri is apparently in advanced talks with taking over as Arsenal manager so unless he is planning to have 3 central defenders it doesn’t look likely.

  3. With arsenal it’s always next season this and that but I hate to burst anyone’s bubble but there’s zero truth to this rumor,50mil for a defender will not happen!

  4. Well, ahead of next season, it’s good to start looking forward as to which players Arsenal are likely to sign and also contemplate on which players they are likely to sell too to accommodate the in signings during the next coming summer transfer window. To me, Arsenal are thin and getting old at left back as Monreal is said to be getting old and Gibbs is suspect to getting injuries often than not. But Le Prof has recruited one Cohen Bramall for cover at his left back if he comes good after his induction training at the U23 team. And we shouldn’t forget that Arsenal also have Marc Bola of the U23 team now on loan as another possible option at left back if he can cut a senior grade form. So, Arsenal may not even sign a new LB in the summer if Monreal leaves as these 2 options of Bramall and Bola comes good in addition to having Gibbs as the main regular LB next season.

Arsenal have 5 CBs as of now in: Mertesacker(aging and becoming slower), Koscielny(aging), Mustafi, Paulista, Chambers and Holding. But Arsenal are keeping Mert’ for another year and Paulista is versatile. Save if anything serious happen to one of Mert’ , Kos’ & Mustafi that sidelines him for a long spell, I don’t see Le Prof signing Kosta Manolas at £50m transfer fee in the summer in as much as he’s said to be highly rated. I think Arsenal wanted to sign him at one time when he was at a Creek club but his high asking price stopped Arsenal from signing him. But why would Monaco want to sell him now and to Arsenal?

  5. A load of old cobblers never going to happen. Under Wenger Arsenal are only interested in singing Kid’s . So why dosen’t Wenger step down and become the youth Development Officer.

And at right back, Arsenal have 3 specialists there in: Bellerin Jenkinson and Debuchy. And they also have Paulista and Maitland-Niles who they can adapt to play in that position. Arsenal wanted to offload at least one of Debuchy or Jenkinson during the last winter window but they couldn’t. Who knows whether their inability to offload one of them during the last window may turnout to be a blessing for Arsenal and the duo as the current season’s campaign wore on.
