Did Wenger just reveal Fonte IS an Arsenal transfer target?

There are a lot of Arsenal transfer rumours flying around the football media at the moment, with the lion’s share of them relating to our search for an experienced central defender to fill in the holes left by Per Mertesacker having surgery on his knee and Gabriel joining him in the treatment room soon afterwards.

Lots of defenders have been linked with a possible move to the Emirates but until Arsene Wenger actually gets the ball rolling we do not know which, if any, of them will be the new Gunner. However, we can make an educated guess or read into the comments made by people involved in the situation and surely no one is more involved than Wenger himself.

So it was interesting to hear our manager stating with certainty that he would sign a centre back over the next two weeks, as reported by the Evening Standard, and I think he may have inadvertently dropped a big hint about who that might be.

Perhaps I amreading too much into his words and it could just be a coincidence, but when the Frenchman spoke about there being no age restriction to his search for the right player, he just happened to use the age of the Southampton and Portugal star Jose Fonte, who has been linked with us and Manchester United this week.

Wenger said, “We have no limit in age.

“If it is a guy of 32 and we think he has the quality then we will do it.”

Has the boss just revealed that Fonte is one of the players on his shopping list?

  1. For an instant impact, I would say Fonte is more likely to shine than someone new to the league (for obvious reasons). He looked very good for Portugal, and very decent at sou, but neither of those teams play the expansive type of game that we do. But if he can suit our style, he would be a good shout over a season or two.

  2. He meant Johnny Evans, I’m done listening to the manager’s lies about “only buying the best quality”

  3. We are getting mustafi IMO … Valencia are holding out because we’re English and have cash to burn , but we’re standing firm for a more realistic price because Valencia have to sell.

What is more worrying is that wenger has gone very quiet on the centre forward front … He’s even mentioned welbeck will be back before Xmas ! ?

    Sound familiar …?

    1. We are English too, okay. Splash the cash and get the best. We have it.

        1. Not half as much as the fan’s will, when they read Wenger’s latest post!
(Some insight into that 15 minute liverpool blizt )

Arsene Wenger has made the staggering revelation that he kept Aaron Ramsey on the pitch against Liverpool despite knowing the midfielder had suffered a hamstring injury.

Arsenal lost the game 4-3 after the Gunners boss was forced to substitute Ramsey when he broke down 15 minutes into the second half.

Wenger has stated that he knew his team were “disturbed” by injury problems at half-time before the Wales international and fellow starter Alex Iwobi were subbed early in the second half.

Wenger allowed Ramsey to stay on the pitch for an hour even though he had four top-class alternative options on the bench in the shape of Granit Xhaka, Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Carzola.

Ramsey was eventually replaced by Cazorla after 61 minutes.

“Mentally, we took a blow at half-time and we did not have the same drive we had in the first half,” Wenger told Arsenal Player, as quoted by theExpress. “It’s due to two reasons especially. One was that Aaron Ramsey came back on to the pitch not exactly the same.

“We knew he had a hamstring problem and our half-time was disturbed by injury problems.

“We got caught cold in the first 15 minutes of the second half physically because Aaron was injured and Alex Iwobi was injured, so we were very diminished.”

  4. Another day and it seems Arsenal have signed another five players according to the “breaking news.”

Apparently players are flying into London from all over the world to have medicals at Arsenal and sign deals. Now I can rest easy.

    1. hello andrew, enjoying the window 🙂

    Pogba

    Arsenal:
    Cech

Soon to be Fonte or Evans

North London ambition @ it’s finest

  6. Arsenal fans in England are honestly letting us down. If Arsenal was based in Kenya you would see all the protests against it’s transfer policy and board! I mean, don’t you people pay the highest ticket prices? For what? To see your team make big signings to show intent of winning major trophies! But no, Arsenal is the second richest club in England, according to Forbes, but looks poor and lost in the real football world. I mean, crystal palace just signed Benteke for £32m.. crystal palace!! suddenly, the 35m for Xhaka and Alexis looks peanuts, an easy signing that anyone can make, including Mr.Wenger!
The team finished 2nd last season needing a striker to finish 1st… if the manager doesn’t do his work and show commitment in boosting the team in the transfer window, how does he expect the team to show commitment in winning anything???

  7. Watching Fonte against Man Utd look very ordinary if this is what Wenger calls Quality God Help us. Wenger is still playing games with the minds of Arsenal Fans. One minute he is ready to spend the next he is say it not my money to spend. Mr Wenger if you are not willing to spend then go and let someone who is willing to spend take over.

  8. Other big clubs have already gotten all they needed. Arsenal Holdings plc (as it is addressed) is still being linked with Player A or B,filled with rumours and some fans are still hoping for some miracle.
