Europa League wins not enough to lift the gloom hanging over Arsenal

A big Europa League win over Vitoria on Wednesday will not ease the pressure on Unai Emery.

Such is the atmosphere at Arsenal right now that even a huge win away at Vitoria in the Europa League on Wednesday afternoon will not be enough to either relieve the pressure on Unai Emery or lift the gloom hanging over the club.

The more I think about it the more I am convinced that nothing short of a significant winning run will suffice for the fans.

The game against Vitoria is really a lose lose situation for Emery. If Arsenal wins it is basically meaningless in terms of the big picture. If Arsenal loses it will increase the calls for Emery to be sacked.

Beating a relatively average Portuguese side is not going to persuade the Emery out brigade to change their minds.

What is required is, as an example, an away win over Tottenham or Man City or home wins over Liverpool and Man City and so on. Additionally, big convincing wins over the smaller teams is also required.

Consistency, comfortable wins, entertaining play and a sense of stability will lift the cloud of despair at the Emirates. That will only come about via the Premier League.

Of course, that is just my own personal opinion but I doubt too many Arsenal fans will disagree. Most now want Emery out if the media reports are anything to go by. Nothing short of a huge turnaround in fortunes will change their minds.

So, beating Vitoria will, of course, be enjoyable and a break from the depressing performances we have seen recently. But it will not change anything.
