Gelson Martins begins his fight to join Arsenal?

We were only discussing yesterday about the need for Arsenal to get a real winger, and the fact that the Sporting wide-man Gelson Martins was the one that had been most linked with the Gunners so far.

Well today it would appear that Martins has taken the first step in getting his contract annulled at Sporting and is being reported that William Carvalho, Martins, Bruno Fernandes, as well as Dutch striker Bas Dost, all filed notice with Portuguese authorities on Monday to say they were breaking their contracts with Sporting, claiming “just cause”.

They also noted that the Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio had already walked out of the club before flying to Russia amid the fallout from last month’s horrific gang attack on players and coaches.

This may be bad news for Portugal and one of their biggest teams, but in the Portugal v Spain pre-game conference midfielder Joao Mario told reporters “Everything that has to do with questions not related to our national team are not going to be discussed because we are all focused on our games for Portugal and the match with Spain,”

“It’s not a question that should be raised now, we are focused on the game against Spain,”

He is right, but it cannot help to prepare for the World Cup with a cloud like that hanging over them. But it does give us extra hope that we can get Martins without a transfer fee, which seems to be something that Arsenal are aiming to do a lot of nowadays…

Coming on a free is not a bad idea

    1. sanmi.marvellous says:

How is he coming free ?
I don’t know. Could you please explain to me ?

      1. Break-on-through says:

The players were attacked on the training ground after missing out on CL football and going out of Europe. He and other players are buying out the rest of their contract.

I read somewhere that he already signed a pre-contract agreement with Benfica.

    2. gotanidea says:

If he is free, he would be a good investment like Kolasinac, Holding, Coquelin, Iwobi and Bellerin

      1. Muffdiver says:

Even at 30 mill he’s a great investment.
Have u not seen him play ?

      2. Robin Vanpayslip says:

Iwobi was a good investment? ???

    3. Ackshay says:

We should be grabbing most of them right now. Martins is a good winger dangerous to defenders ala zaha though his finishing needs training. Carvalho has been wanted by fans for years so getting him free is a gift plus if we can grab bruno fernandes it would be superb.

Would be a little dirty move to grab 3 good players on a free like this but football is not fair lol. We need to be ruthless and judging by cazorla release and wilshere impending departure we are getting there.

    4. Shekar233 says:

I dont understand how playerd can easily cancel their contracts without paying up for the loss caused for the club.

      How is it possible?
      Can someone explain?

In that case any player can cacel thier contract to join their dream club if possible rather than theit current club holding out for ransom.

      Isnt it the case?
      Can someone please enlighten me?

  2. Alan staples says:

If there’s a possibility of getting him, I wouldn’t be disappointed, he’s fast skillful and has a bag of tricks in his arsenal. I know a few people on here will say he has no end product, but a goal or assist every other game is good stats in my book,.

    1. gotanidea says:

If he joins, I hope he doesn’t turn into Gervinho 2.0. I just hope he is a fast learner like Cristiano Ronaldo

  3. Michael Odetola says:

Well the news is true the technical team should put thiet in order to accualized the dreams of this player to Emirate for the upcoming season.

Is he any better than Gervinho? Remember on YouTube even Gervinho seemed out of this world with his dribbling lol.

    1. gotanidea says:

There are similarities. They are both good dribblers, fast and have strong right foot

  5. GERILE JUMA says:

its good idea for the gunners and the player

  6. GOONER says:

We need an experience winger, but would be good to have him @ the arsenal

  7. McLovin says:

Even if he’s Police Academy 7.0: Mission to Moscow -bad, he’s worth the risk IF HE COMES ON A BOSMAN.

And to everyone wondering why would he be free:

SPORTING LISBON training ground got attacked by 50-something masked thugs couple weeks back, because they failed to qualify for CL. The feel of unsafety has been the main reason why star players like Rui Patricio, William Carvalha, Bruno Fernandes and also Gelson Martins, might be able to terminate their contracts and leave their clubs. I think it will be handled by Portuguese football association if they are able to terminate contracts.

  8. Jeremy says:

Portugal side had reported he has signed a pre-agreement with Benfica.

Maybe we should just wait and see what happens.

  9. KAY BOSS says:

yeah it’s been reported by Record in Portugal.

  10. Baron Ramsey says:

Would AMN make a good winger? I think he would

  11. Malch95 says:

Imo arsenal need 3 out of 4 of those players but should investigate how much compensation we could be sued for in case sporting lisbon win in court.

Off topic: interesting to see that both jack Wilshere and Joel Campbell haven’t been released by the club, could mean that Emery has plans for them. Wouldn’t hate the ideaof having them as squad players cause I think they still have something to offer arsenal if rotated into the squad to rest key players and may even come good. A reserve front 3 of Welbeck-Perez-campbell can produce 20-25 goals in my opinion and can only mean the main attackers are working hard and kept on their toes. Jack is still a very decent option off the bench.

    New keeper/Cech

    Lichtsteiner/Bellerin Sokratis/Chambers Soyuncu/Mavropanas Monreal/kolsinac
    Ramsey/Wilshere Xhaka/Elneny/torreira
    Campbell/Martin’s Ozil/Myki Welbeck/lacazette

    reserves: AMN, Holding, Nelson, Nketiah

Could defs help us back into champions league onwards and upwards!

    1. I read somewhere that JC is expected to sign
with Galatassaray once his contract expires at
      the end of the month.
Jack W signing an extension doesnt move the
needle imo, the Englishmen is Arsenal through
and through but sadly his current best isnt
anywhere good enough to consistently feature
      in the 1st 11 @ Arsenal.
I do rate Perez, but if Lazio or another club
can offer him 1st team assurances he will be
      off as well.

I would add one of Seri/Doucoure/Ndombele to
your midfield list and hand El Neny or Xhaka
      there walking papers.

  12. Beaveraldinho says:

He’s signed a Pre contract with Benfica from what I’ve read…

  13. Ozziegunner says:

This means Cavahlo is also available; surely worth Sven Mislattat investigating.
Given the actions of the masked thugs against the Sporting Lisbon players would Martins or any player risk the repercussions of moving to Benfica?

  14. Sheet Head says:

I won’t believe a word about the benfica rumors until Kev confirms it. I have longed to see Martins in Arsenal. Surely, Benfica can’t beat us to him. Plus, its being reported by only one source. Kev, oh mighty seer, what is our standing with Glenson Martins??

  15. Jeremy says:

Looks like Xmas is cancelled again as always for the past 20 years.

‘There is no players available’ and finally, staffs congratulate each other for a successful transfer window.

Lol…. well, I hope I don’t see the same thing repeating.

  16. RSH says:

this guy plays exclusively as a right winger. Don’t we need a left one? Miki on left is not nearly as good. But still, he is free so I won’t be upset if we get him of course, just wondering if he is essential and if it is what Emery wants.

  17. Brian Rotic says:

    Chambers (20M)

    NET = 50M

    Brian Rotic VS Sven Mislintat
