Henry finally believes in Giroud’s ability to lead Arsenal to the title!

Arsenal have managed to get to the top of the League table at the halfway point in the campaign and it seems that Thierry Henry has finally become convinced that the Gunners really can win the title with Olivier Giroud as their main striker, after famously stating during the summer that it was impossible. Most of Giroud’s strikes have come from assists by the fabulous Mesut Ozil, and Henry thinks that this partnership is now the crucial factor for Arsenal’s season.

“Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil are finally showing the consistency to match their unquestionable ability,” Henry said in the The Sun. “Now they can lead Arsenal to the title because the team has learned how to win the big games even when they don’t dominate possession.”

“I would have struggled to play in this way because I wasn’t the greatest in the air and wouldn’t have won enough headers. But that is what Olivier brings to the team,”

“It caused a real stir last year when I said that Arsenal couldn’t win the title with Giroud as their only striker.

“There have never been any doubts about Giroud’s ability. We all know he can score goals and is a great finisher and that he loves to share and help his teammates. But when you play for Arsenal you have to turn up and perform in every match. And Giroud is finally showing the consistency that was missing in previous seasons.

“It is the same story with Ozil, who is now showing he can deliver in the games against the big teams. For a team to win the title they need a striker who is capable of scoring 30 goals a season and a No. 10 who is creating like crazy. Arsenal now have both of those players to rely on in the title run-in.”

Henry added that “if Giroud and Ozil keep performing at their current level, there is no reason why they can’t stay top right to the end of the season.”

The fact is that a large percentage of Arsenal fans also agreed that Giroud was not good enough for Arsenal, but surely he has silenced his critics this time. Or has he?

  1. A large portion wont admit to seeing an improvement until he breaks into the 20 goal chart, pl goals. I think he has improved, not just his end product but I think he looks sharper, even slightly a little quicker off the mark. He looks in great physical shape and seems to be enjoying it allot more. Also other players are becoming better accustomed to him as he is to them also. He was unlucky with his injury last season and barring injury I can see him breaking into the 20 goal region before may, add to that his assists, his aerial ability at both ends along with his doggedness, and link up ..well ..he is a very useful player in my opinion of course.

  2. Giroud has been great for us – been largely injury free (which is rare for Arsenal), gets better every season, and kept he’s head together when Walcott was really threatening his position upfront

All that said, if ( a big ‘if) we have our defensive midfield cover/competition we’ve all been after with our new signing- the striker role remains the most obvious position we could improve as a team

Unless Wellbeck shows genuine class after returning from injury, and Walcott challenges for this position more – no doubt us fans will still be crying out for a ‘class’ striker come end of the season!

  3. Admini, happy Sunday to all of us the Arsenals. I think Thierry Henry statement of “Arsenal cannot win the Premier League title with Olivier Giroud as their main striker” has spurned on Giroud to hit greater heights. Hence, his high goals scoring for Arsenal so far this season. Arsenal will win today’s Premier League match against Stoke City if the Boss and the Gunners will avoid making mistakes in doing the starts, substitutions and taking their chances. 1st, the Boss should start De Aberu at CB instead of Rhinosacker and also start Elneny at Dmf instead of Flamini for this match. Rhino’ & Flamini should be started on the bench. And the Boss should bring on only the subs that can perfom very well. The Gunners are master creators of chances in the person of Ozil and others. If the Gunners will convert 75% of the chances they will create in this match, they’ll beat Stoke by a wide margin. Some final score-line like, SCFC 0-5 AFC is a possibity. Arsenal rarely converts 50% of the chances they created.

      1. we need to sacrifice our passing style and shore up our defence, against Liverpool we couldn’t pass d ball but we scored 3 goals, that tells me if we shore up our defense we can still score, so lets play 3 defensive midfielders, we will win. If we play Ozil he will be kicked off the park by stoke and he wont be up for the fight. Elneny, Ramsey and Flamini can toughen up our midfield.

  5. Same story every year. People doubt. Giroud comes good. Everyone’s happy then during the summer the striker rumours start and the cycle begins again!
