Holding reveals that Emery has copied Guardiola method for choosing a captain

Arsenal centre half Rob Holding has been speaking quite a bit over the last 48 hours and who can blame him, he is fresh from a long term injury, had a fantastic comeback game Tuesday evening against Nottingham Forest and even captained the side for the last 20 minutes or so.

In fact, Holding has been discussing the Arsenal captaincy role and has confirmed that the players have had a vote for who will be the next Arsenal captain.

“He likes his five captains. We all did a vote the other week so we’ll see what happens and see who gets named,” Holding said.

“It was just a case of writing names down and then giving them to the manager and he will go through them – obviously with his input – and we’ll see what happens.

“I have no idea [when an announcement will be made], but there is a lot of leaders in that team who are helping each other out and pushing each other on.

“Now that we’ve got these five captains that the manager has brought in it’s spreading the leadership group rather than having one person to dictate it. You’re getting more input, it’s generating a good environment.”

Some of the responses to the way Emery is picking a captain has been heavily criticised by some of the fans, just look at some of the responses to the tweet from Football.London journalist James Benge.

Thing is this, I just do not get what all the hullabaloo is about, this is quite a common practice with foreign managers, Pep Guardiola did the exact same thing at Man City, I have not seen anyone having a go at him and calling it terrible management.

Just seems to be an excuse to have a go at Emery, I see nothing wrong with the players choosing a player that they want to be captain and who they respect enough to vote for.

If it does not work out then, by all means, have aa pop at Emery but until such a time his method of choosing a captain should be supported.

  1. Pathetic way of choosing the captain. It’s the managers job to pick him. He’s bottling it so if it goes wrong he can say “well you lot picked him”.

    1. Exactly, he knows the moment he decides Xhaka will be captain, then the fans will even turn around and they’ll question him more.
Best thing is to avoid the scenario by asking others to do the selection.
A coach is meant to be responsible for who the captain is.
The squad might as well vote for starters every week

  2. Unai Emery said Chambers did not follow his instruction to play safe on the left back position. Does this show how negative Emery is in his tactics? Does this mean he is the one not making the team play attacking football? I suspect the team sheet was Ljunberg’s selection not Emery’s.

    1. Nonesense. It’d be completely stupid to tell an emergency RB who was transferred to LB to play adventurously.
Of course he’ll ask him to play it safe.
The arsenal fans can be pathetic.

  3. I am every ardent supporter of Arsenal Team, and I pledge to support the manager in his bid to have players paticipate in voting their rightful leaders, Personally I would vote For Auba, if given the chance

  4. You see nothing wrong in the coach asking the players to pick the captain?
How about the players select each match day squad every weekend then?
You don’t know how pathetic and weak that is?
Is he ever gon man up and make his stand? I thought he was singing about his five captains, and announcing them soon.
Suddenly after Xhaka got booed by the fans, he’s asking the guys to vote and pick their captain.
Do you know the disadvantages that brings is much more than the advantages?
Creating cults in the team, and it’s a cynical move if we’re being honest here.
I ask again, will Ozil, Xhaka and Luis with all their experience and age vote for Holding or Guendouzi as captain??

    1. I personally wouldn’t care who Özil, Xhaka and Luis prefer as captain because they are contributing very little to the advancement of the team. Why is it that their valuable experience doesn’t come to the fore on the pitch? Frankly, Arsenal cannot rely on reputation, but current form to win matches. If the three see age ahead of ability, then they have no place in the team.

  5. Then he should have copied Guardiola’s 4-3-3 as well. I think this would fix our defending issue, but the coach has to introduce it slowly:

    ……………… Leno
    Bellerin . Luiz . Holding . Tierney
    ……………. Chambers
    ……….Ceballos ………. Xhaka
    Pepe ………………….. Aubameyang
    …………… Lacazette

    1. We have sen know this season that Chambers needs to be in the starting 11 one way or another. I would have to agree that if we cant fit him in the defence he would make a perfect DM, this just brings the question of where to play torrerea but tbh we could employ a different formation, maybe 4 2 2 2 ? or just have the 433 ande play Torrera/guendozi instead of xhaka

    2. wow great selection, but remember Emery Unai said Bellerin is not fit to start against MAN U. In this situation i suggest chambers should take his place. Lacazette is not back from the last injury.Martinelli can take his place considering his performance against Nott forest
      LENO
      Chambers.. Socratis.. Holdings.. Tierney
      Luiz Ozil
      Pepe Aubameyang
      Martinelli

    3. Why do you lot keep putting up a team selection that lacks Guendouzi? Am glad you’re not the man in charge @ gotanidea

  6. Silly method. Have some authority and stick with one leader. It’s nice what Rob said, but it’s just not true. Last season he did the same thing, and when things ever got dicey, no player took responsibility on the pitch to rally the troops. Don’t really care what City does, it doesn’t work for US.

  7. Well then, we now know why Ozil…you know the bit part player who has to accept his new role…was chosen to lead our youngest team for years don’t we? The Players…wow admin martin…wow.
I bet that pi**ed off Unai, because he then had to play him.

Just as I thought, the players respect him, see him as a leader and are learning every day from him!!!

As for mimicking Pep, well he has TRIED to play out from the back and he has TRIED to press our opponents…let’s see if he can win any trophies as well!!!

  8. I support Admin Martin saying and I quote ” The Method Of Chosing A Captain Should Be Supported” Reasons being that 1. Responsiblity shared amongst the players. 2. The players know themselves than the coach. For the coach that’s a leader’s quality responsibility sharing if you permit me to use that word.

  9. Why suddenly asking the first team Gunners to pick their 5 team captains if something is not cooking when Unai Emery the Arsenal head coach has before picked the 5 Arsenal 1st team captains solely by himself last season?

My choice of 5 Arsenal captains in pecking order is as below.

    1st Team Captain: Mesut Ozil.
    1st Vice-Captain: Granit Xhaka.
    2nd Vice-Captain: Lacazette.
    3rd Vice-Captain: Chambers.
    4th Vice-Captain: Aubameyang.

To whom much is given much is expected.

Since UE may not be starting M Ozil in every Premier League game, as a result of which Xhaka who regularly start will be captaining the team when Ozil is not starting. To relegate Xhaka below the 1st Vice-Captain of the 1st XI team will kill the espirit de corp in the 1st XI team. You don’t do that and UE should not do it.

The danger in showing favoritism in match day team selection is obvious. It can lead to the team coach losing his respect before his players. Emery should always base his match day 18 selection for PL matches on individual Gunner experience, top form, physical fitness, strong energy level, enhanced match playing stamina, mental strength, tactical know how, good technics and good delivery.

  11. As a matter of fact i don’t mind if our coach is Selecting 10 captain or more nor if he want the players to choose for themselves whos going to be the captain but the main thing is getting xhaka out of the first eleven if you see The same thing am seein our first two epl games Xhaka did not play we won and play fine but since when he’s back in the starting line up we are win less in the epl until Aston villa and we only won that game because Xhaka has to be removed from the game my point is our coach is getting lot of thins wrong.must he played Xhaka while Torreira is our only natural 4 must he played Niles at rb when Chambers can play that role why can’t he focused on a formation with same set of players and make changes only when is needed rather than Switching formation and Rotating squad every week
