If Emery wants Juan Mata at Arsenal then I’m not going to argue

Mata to Arsenal in the summer of 2019 by Neil Watson

Amid interest from Arsenal to sign Juan Mata as a replacement for the outgoing Cesc Fabregas the deal looks like it may finally come to fruition 7 years later than originally forecast….

I saw a post this morning on talksport, from that bloke that does a show with Jason Cundy, that Juan Mata might leaving United in the summer and joining Arsenal on a free to be reunited with Unai whom he played under at Valencia.

In the summer on 2011 when Fabregas left for Barcelona it was more than a rumour that Mata was on his way to Arsenal for 17.5 million as a replacement for Fabregas who left for Barca for 40 million. At the same time we were also in advanced talks with Gary Cahill….Both players ended up at Chelsea and the rest is history.

If ever there was a player that would have worked perfectly at Arsenal its Mata and despite it now being in the twilight years of his career, I think he will still bring something creatively to our team and add a different attacking option.

I know you’ll be guessing this is about to turn into an article all slagging off how indecisive our previous management was but it’s not, although the temptation to do so was enormous!

Unai and our new management regime are active and not afraid to make mistakes. Unai is a half full guy, not half empty, he backs the upside. Whatever you do in life if your boss gives off an air of positivity it rubs off on you. It’s why managers like Venables and Harry Redknapp made things happen because of their positivity. But that positivity can only carry you a certain distance, it’s an important piece of a big puzzle.

I should imagine many other managers wouldn’t have looked twice at Lichtsteiner yet his fight and commitment is something our squad has lacked for years. I think Unai admires that in players, as do I.

We are all aware our unbeaten run can’t continue forever but it does tell you how our team has developed a siege mentally. Two years ago we would have lost a soft game and then beaten a top flight team with a flourish. That’s utterly pointless. Beat the soft team and don’t lose to the top team. That’s six points by taking taking two off your opposition.

Unai’s run will come to an end but how our team has been transformed is quite amazing and I imagine most fans can see why we would welcome Mata into the fold and what he could bring to our team. I believe Unai’s manner is playing a huge part in making players want to join Arsenal.

In that the spuds have huffed and puffed and achieved zero we have lost our crown as Kings of North London but we are most certainly on our way back!

  1. Unlikely.
But it must be noted, for all the stick we get for our players running down contracts, United have De Gea, Martial, Shaw (now signed) and Mata (couple of others too I can’t recall) and looks like Sanchez wants to go PSG..
    This is the game now.

  2. Truth be to told, I don’t want Mata at Arsenal… He abandoned our contract talk that year and went for more money when Chelsea came calling and what now? Suddenly he cares about Arsenal to play for us? Using Emery as an excuse, plus are we turning into a retirement home or what? almost half of our squad is filled with players in their 30’s and please don’t give me the bullshit of him being a midfielder who’ll score free kicks for us.
Xhaka is doing so under Emery, Torerria sure can take free kicks too… I don’t get the hype about Mata now, give me Martial, give me Rakitic, Modric or Silva, hell not Mata… If you once rejected us for more money and want to come back after your career is hitting a low, I say Fvck you

    1. Well said Eddie Hoyte, I would rather we went for Adrien Rabiot of PSG if we are looking for freebies but not at silly wages (£80k/week is decent enough).

  3. Well, I AM going to argue. But not because I don’t want Mata; I do. But I just want to hear him argue- we have not done so thus far and it would be fun to see how he speaks when he is angry. D’you reckon he gets really angry in the dressing room at half time, as he sure gets regular second half success! Also, does anyone know if he ever gets stuck zipping up his coat OR can Spaniards manage zips unlike what certain Frenchmen clearly cannot.

  4. I thought this topic was already dealt with earlier. He is probably looking for a free with a signing on fee and a hefty wage deal. He’ll be 31 next April and is definitely slowing down so why do we need him?

  5. “We have lost our crown as Kings of North London…” ??? How on earth do you justify that ridiculous statement? Arsenal have won three FA Cups in the past four years. The Spuds have won nothing in the past 10 years and haven’t been crowned champions in nearly 60 years. What a stupid and wildly inaccurate thing to say…

  6. I remember when our very own fans would criticise our previous manager for fielding youthful teams with little experience or no maturity. Now we have a manager who seems to value talent no matter how old they are and now its a case of “He’s too old, player X is cheaper or can play there, he never wanted us in the first place, money mercenary” etc.

Mata is still a very good player IMHO and could be useful to the team, especially on a free! I think the powers that be have already decided that Ramsey is surplus to requirements and Mata could well be an adequate replacement.

Ramsey or Mata…. Who would you choose??

(That’s a tough one for me but I’m gonna show some solidarity/blind faith/Wengerian loyalty and stick with Ramsey even though I suspect Mata has scored more goals and been more influential for the teams he’s played in.

  7. “I should imagine many other managers wouldn’t have looked twice at Lichtsteiner yet his fight and commitment is something our squad has lacked for years”.

Stop this nonsense Emery masturbation. Lichsteiner has so far underwhelmed and would have been a heavily criticized transfer had this been a season or two ago. There’s this trend of finding a positive in Emery’s every fart.

  8. “We are all aware our unbeaten run can’t continue forever but it does tell you how our team has developed a siege mentally. Two years ago we would have lost a soft game and then beaten a top flight team with a flourish. That’s utterly pointless. Beat the soft team.”

Can you people write articles without creating delusional alternate” facts” to support your agendas? Two seasons ago, Arsenal went 19 games unbeaten from September to December. The revisionist history on this platform is becoming nauseating. Emery did not inherit a relegation bound team or even a mid-table team, but one that had won 3 domestic cups in the last 5 seasons, reached the league cup final, Europa league semifinal and finished 6th in the league in the last year. That’s hardly a dead team. By May, we would know if he improved the team or not.

  9. “We have lost our crown as Kings of North London but we are most certainly on our way back!”.

You are crowned by winning things and I know the club that has 3 trophies in the last 4 seasons and the one that’s “put pressure on”.

This author should go get some lessons on writing.
