Mertesacker to play only BIG games for Arsenal next year?

If you forget about the FA cup final then I reckon most Arsenal fans would not be too fussed about whether or not the big World Cup winning Germany international would ever play for Arsenal again, as Per Mertesacker had been missing all season through injury and with his lack of pace there were not too many calls for him to be rushed back in.

We cannot just forget that Wembley final, though, because our BFG played a starring role in a game in which Arsenal were heavily fancied to lose against the newly crowned Premier League champions Chelsea. Despite just over half an hour of league football under his belt the German played an absolute blinder and that suggests that he could do the same thing when called upon next season.

In an interview with the German press reported by Metro the Arsenal captain and centre back declared that next year would be his last as a player and that he will not be able to play regularly, so will Arsene Wenger just use him to give the other defenders like Mustafi, Koscielny and Holding a rest?

Per said, ‘I am motivated, but I can not play every three days anymore. I do not want to push my luck.

‘I told him [Arsene Wenger] I was tired, mentally drained. I’ve been thinking of my career, there’s nothing to it, I’m going to finish. It didn’t matter how hard I’d trained, I did not get a chance.’

To be perfectly honest I was seriously worried when I saw Wenger’s team sheet for the Wembley final but Mertesacker proved me completely wrong and proved his worth in emphatic style against a very strong side, so maybe Wenger will actually save him for this sort of big game next season. What do you guys think?

  1. Per is definitely a guy id have around the club if not playing he’s still a guy that the younger players can learn from.. I’m personally glad he’s staying on another year, you can’t ship out every player over 30 a team needs a mix of youth and experience if only Wenger held onto the likes of Ljungberg and Gilberto a little longer our younger players could of developed a bit better. OT Rip Cheick Tiote another footballer gone before his time.

    1. Hahaha who is the coward that gave Kev a thumb down, I thought we got rid of all the spuds off here. Like he said we can’t clear out every player in one transfer window, even if we need to change half the squad. If you feel like that then you probably should just support another team. Mertesacker would be a great player to have at the club and he is basically saying he is happy to be 4th, 5th choice CB.

  3. Absolutely disgusting from the SUN
What bothers them if the terrorist wears an arsenal shirt or a jockey underwear or Calvin Klein socks..
    Shame on them….

    1. The Sun newspaper is SC*M.They mocked Liverpool about Hillsborough and Liverpool have banned them and now Everton had banned them too(Ross Barkley).Arsenal should ban them too after the latest stunt they pulled.Ban and boycott the SC*UM that is the Sun newspaper.

  4. his own words are very clear….and they indicate clearly what he wants us to expect from him next season. obviously he made up his mind about what he wants to do. this even made me respect him more.
to answer the article question, it is not logical to keep him for only big games….in order to perform, players need to play constantly…..thats just how things are. to be honest, until now im amazed of how well he performed after a year of injury……but its a mistake to think any player can provide this kind of performance without regularly playing.
