Out-of-favour defender closing on Arsenal move

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers is reported to be closing on a loan move to Watford this summer.

The defender has struggled to break into Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans this season, and despite his versatility, only started two Premier League matches.

Arsenal are expected to bring in further options in defence this summer, which will make it even harder for the England international to feature under Wenger next term. Now Chambers is believed to be in line to join the Hornets next for the upcoming campaign.

Watford would not mean the former Southampton youth product would have to travel far, with Vicaeidge Road sitting less than 20 miles away from the Emirates.

The Hornets had Nathan Ake on loan from Chelsea this season, and will need to bring in a defender to cover from the young Dutchman. The Blues have incoming boss Antonio Conte set to join the fold following the European Championships this summer, and Ake’s future is up in the air at present.

Chambers has been linked with a possible switch back to Southampton this summer, but a move to Watford appears more likely at present.

The 21 year-old was the club’s fourth-choice centre-back this year, and while Per Mertesacker is not 100% certain to stay on at the club, a defender is firmly expected to be brought into the fold.

I’m in favour of sending Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out on loan for the current season also, with the midfielder struggling to break into the first-team also this season.

Will Chambers live up to his potential and earn a regular role at Arsenal in the future? Is Watford ideal to help him develop?
