Overmars tells Arsenal hands-off but admits Ajax are a selling club

Marc Overmars sends a very clear hands-off message to Arsenal, but……

Former Arsenal legend Marc Overmars is not interested in helping his old club with their interest in Nicolas Tagliafico, in fact, the Ajax sporting director has sent an unequivocal hands-off message.

We have been consistently linked with the defender ever since news broke that the 26-year-old had rejected a contract extension, however, Overmars remains confident that Tagliafico is not going anywhere.

‘We also want to keep Nico Tagliafico and David Neres here,’ Overmars told NOC when asked if any more players would be signing contract extensions as had happened recenlty with Andre Onana.

‘If you start reading the news on sports sites every time, you will continue to give your question and answer.

‘In the end, we provide the answer ourselves, because of course we are working with Nico to keep him here for another year. Let’s see that in the coming weeks.’

You cannot blame Overmars for being determined to keep hold of his own players, it is his job and his loyalty is to Ajax, he has already seen Frenkie de Jong sign for Barcelona and expects to lose Hakim Ziyech and Matthijs de Ligtas as well.

‘Losing three or four players is quite a lot,’ he continued. ‘But you also have to accept it. We do everything we can to keep players, but you know you have to rebuild. A good example is two years ago after the European success under Peter Bosz.’

Of course, if Tagliafico pushes through with a move then Ajax and Overmars may not have much choice in the matter and in that event one has to be hopeful that he may use whatever influence he has on the player to push him our way but we have to be realistic that in this day and age of football old team loyalties play no part, it is all about the money.

If Unai Emery really does want to sign the Argentine then you have to think we have a decent chance, he has rejected a contract extension and Ajax do seem to have an issue with hanging on to their best talent.

  1. I am failing to see where Overmars told Arsenal directly hands off and any evidence we are interested in any players let alone this particular one.

Also stop thinking Overmars owes us something. Based on time at a club he’s more likely to push players to Barcelona. He spent more time playing at Ajax and Barcelona than he did Arsenal. If I remember rightly he couldn’t leave Arsenal quickly enough. He wanted a big payday and a better chance at winning big trophies. It’s almost like saying in years to come Van Persie owes us players or even better cashly Cole if any of them become high up at another club. Yeah right, clutching at straws aren’t you!
