Oxlade-Chamberlain scores brilliant opener for England against Scotland (plus video)

It took over 70 minutes to break the deadlock in England’s World Cup Qualifier in Scotland last night, but it was worth waiting for as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain walked through the Scottish defence before the Arsenal striker banged it past Gordon to give the Lions the lead. This led to a thrilling climax as the Scots got two goals back to take the lead with just minutes to go.

The England lads never gave up and Tottenham’s Harry Kane recued a point for England in the dying seconds. This is how The Ox described the experience after the game. He said: ‘Scotland showed us what fight they have and the quality in their team. We were disappointed to be in front and then concede the two goals. We’d have liked to have seen out the game.

‘I’ve got to give credit to Leigh Griffiths. His two free kicks were magnificent. After the first one went in I thought, surely not. But he’s got a great technique and I’ve seen him do that sort of thing before.

‘To come from 2-1 down with the atmosphere the way it was so late in the game was a positive because we’ve worked very hard this week on team spirit and togetherness. We worked on not stopping until the final whistle and that’s a positive for us.

‘It was nice to get on the scoresheet. When I came on it was my job to change the game and I managed to that. Gareth said to get at the full back and create and go and win us the game. That was his message but it was a big uphill battle in the last few minutes.

‘I looked around my team-mates and the body language was good. I felt we still had something more to give. Ultimately we wanted to win but we’ll take the point.’

The Ox doesn’t score many goals for Arsenal, in fact he has never scored more than 2 League goals in any of his 6 seasons with the Gunners, but this one for England was absolutely amazing.

  1. James Rodriguez as a CM – brilliant
His technical ability , vision , composure , long range screamers , positional discipline.
He may not be a good tackler but as our midfield is now steel and muscle now ( xhaka , kolasinac, ox) we can afford to have a creative midfielder like James.

    1. Another Mesut Ozil who feels he’s not gonna track back or pile pressure on opposing defenders…Wenger will just bring in another player who might go missing when you expect him to make the change….

  2. It would be absolutely hilarious if the Ox now comes out & says that he wants to move to Liverpool…. Hold that thought! ?

What’s the odds on Losing Sanchez, Bellerin and the Ox during this window? At least we still have Ramsey and Walcott ?
