Hellas Verona are claimed to be eyeing a move to sign Arsenal’s Pablo Mari.
The defender was one of Mikel Arteta first signings, joining on an initial loan deal from Flamengo a month into the Spaniard’s reign in north London, but found himself surplus to requirements last term as Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White formed a strong partnership at the back.
Mari eventually left to join Udinese on loan in January, but has since returned to the club, and is now on the lookout for a new permanent home.
He could be set for a return to Serie A however with reports that Verona are now considering a move to sign him, as quoted in La Gazzetta’s printed edition (as quoted by UdineseBlog.it).
I was a little surprised by how quickly Mari fell out of favour at the Emirates, as I thought he was one of Arteta’s favourites in his opening 18 months, but it is clear at this point that he would have no role to play if he stayed into the new season.
William Saliba is expected to bring further competition for the CB roles this year, and cashing in on Mari seems the most obvious choice.

Remind me!!!!!! Why did we sign Mari?
I never thought that Mari was ever supposed to be more than a loan signing during the January transfer window until May. It was Sanhelli who signed him long term as he did with Cedric
Let me guess sanhelli also signed Willian as well
Mari was at Man City coached by Arteta ,he even said that he knew him well that’s why he bought him in .
Thanks for that info Dan kit. I knew the background but was obviously under the misguided belief that he was brought in for the short term. You clearly know that was not the case.
Why bring up Willian? That was an error by both Arteta and the player himself. One I hadn’t foreseen happening, but happen it did
anyone who doesn’t think Mari, who played for Pep during Arteta’s “apprenticeship”, was a Raul-led signing and not an acquisition who arrived at the Emirates due to a concerted push by our novice manager so as to get a familiar face and a locker room ally, needs to have a bit of a rethink
I’d be grateful for a fuller explanation as to why you think that?
Ok we get Sue, Mikel has to get rid of all previous coach players in 4 3 years before he becomes successful. I’m just wondering if any coach that takes over from him will have to do the same.
Sorry Adiva
I haven’t a clue what you mean
Players come and go at any club
Players get older – too old, slower perhaps
Players lose form, others get better
Sure as eggs are eggs, if Arteta stays at Arsenal for 3 plus years there will transfers in and out. Doesn’t this happen at every summer transfer window at every club?
