What is going on with Arsenal, Ivan, Wenger and the never-ending speculation?

Uncertainty around Arsenal will likely roll on until the summer. by Konstantin

Rumours, rumours and more rumours. Some interesting, some, not so much! Arsenal have become a major debate for the media and suggestions are that big changes are coming in the summer. Now, I’ve heard this before. We’ve been promised competing with Bayern, war chests and what not, but nothing has significantly changed.

There is a little rumour going on that Ivan and Arsene are having a little cold war and that Gazidis is the main drive for change. This makes some sense to me, because Ivan is the youngest person on the board apart from Josh Kroenke and he’s a smart man. Be certain he’s noticed the empty seats, the protests and the banners.

He’ll know our revenue is likely to suffer with the lack of champions league football and the major fan drawbacks. I also believe he has one hand tied down, because Wenger’s relationship with Kroenke and the ever increasing stock market value of Arsenal is all the owner cares about.

But of course this is all speculation, because we don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes, but something is going on there for sure. It’s sad that we’re unlikely to hear it before the summer. Arsene & the Board may believe it’s for the better, but for me a decision right now would benefit everyone!

Latests report suggest Marc Overmars is a candidate for a director of football. I loved Overmars as a player and he’s a director of football at Ajax. Dortmunds Michael Zorc is another candidate which name is thrown around, and the only reason I fear hiring ex players who’ve played for Wenger is they could be another ‘yes man’.

The whole director or football role is one that doesn’t add up with Arsene staying. Our whole strategy for nearly 10 years was to leave it all to Arsene and we suddenly decided we’ll change it, by introducing people who should take some of his responsibility but still keep him? Even if we do add such a person, Arsene still won’t make a substitution before minute 60 if his life depended on it!

He won’t change his tactics either. Arsene is stuck to a losing formula for ages and he still believes in it. The director of football might help with our transfer policy, but Wenger ultimately will be the one picking the squad, and he’ll have the final say on the players he wants to bring.

And let’s just say Arsene changed over a hundred players since his last league title and he’s only gone backwards! And even if Overmars or Zorc is appointed and they pick some of the players we buy, if Arsene doesn’t like them, he won’t pick them. We’ve seen numerous times how Arsene killed players who started with potential (Arshavin springs to mind).

The daily Mail suggest some of the board members no longer trust Arsene. Funny, but their roles aren’t really important and the Kroenke – Wenger financial relationship is the one that has to break for us to see real change. I hope that the board and the players go the owner and say “Look, things are not working with that guy”, but sadly I don’t see us doing it.

Arsene spent 90 million this summer and he went backwards from where he was when he only bought a sole goalkeeper. Reports suggest he’ll be given more than 100 million and with players ready to be sold it could reach 200! Why don’t we trust somebody new with this?

The protests are doing a good job. Even with their relatively small numbers, we’ve been noticed and the situation around the club will change this summer in one way or another. Times change, and Arsene’s banned this word from the dictionary at Arsenal, but football is a game of eras.

We had the boring, boring Arsenal, the one nil to the Arsenal, the Invincibles era, the weak mentality era (this one) and now finally the post-Wenger era seems as close as ever. Arsene is still more than 90% certain to stay, but look, if he doesn’t spend on a massive overhaul, fans will go into meltdown.

If he spends 150 million plus on players and he doesn’t achieve instant success, he’ll be targeted again. He cannot do this overhaul. Arsene is a figure splitting the fans and slowly but surely people are leaning onto the Wenger Out side of the equation.

If you think this season is bad, wait until next year, to see Arsene’s “revolution” and it will be even worse. Even if we change 10 players, we still have 15 more who don’t like him. If he stays, he’s only creating more enemies for himself. Even if we appoint new personnel like a director of football, if they don’t have power over him, it won’t change a bit.

Lastly, I want to say that nowadays I follow more what fans say after the games, rather than the games themselves and the general opinion is that we need change and 90% of those people said change means changing the manager. Honestly I had enough. I have been following this club for the better part of my life and I cannot live with more of the same.

I survived the sale of Vieira, Henry, Van Persie, Fabregas and Nasri, but this time I really fear for the summer. We’ve lost our class. We’ve turned into a business rather than a football club and that mentality has spread from Wenger to players like Giroud who say trophies are not important. With this mentality, we’re never attracting more players like Sanchez.

Change! It’s the only way.

  1. I think he’s already signed the contract. He’s just waiting for a time when everyone isn’t so hostile. If he was going to leave he would have said it when we lost to west brom. It would act more as a rallying cry to get everyone behind the team to finish in the top 4. I truly believe most of the problems between fans at the moment is because no one knows what the hell is going on. In a perfect world wenger would say he’s leaving and a top manager is coming in. However, I fear that wenger signed that contract ages ago and waiting for a “good” time to tell us and I don’t think that will happen until the end of the season.

  2. he will stay. They are just deciding when to announce it. Let’s not forget how gutless and useless these people are…

  3. Stan
    Ivan
    Arsene

    Initials spell out sia. Coincidence?
Not on your life u pigeon!

Who knew this whole time the answer to.our prayers was an Australian singer in her forties

    Save us oh harmonic one

  4. Whats going on? Are we fans supposed to be rlly that dense? Wenger has the apsolute power at Arsenal. He is the only one who understands football. All the others on the top are no sports people. They are money people. and Wenger is a money manager. He always was. But money managers wont have the luxury to earn money and win trophys this time. bec other teams spit on us with quality as they have catched up big time. They have the means to compete.

Without Wenger the board wont have the defence. They wont have their knight who protects them from fault and failuare. Wenger is the one who keeps everything working. Without Wenger the board will be targeted next. Usmanov is lurking and that stupid yank might think to millk the club as far as he can before he loses the old fart Wenger. The money maker.

Wenger has no life without Arsenal. He needs the club more then we need him. He wants to stay but at this moment he has not the face to come out and continue with his bs.

Trully pathetic. I dont know no other club who is being managed that bad like we do. In the football sense of course. Businues wise we are top. Underperformers paradise.

    1. Arsenal are no longer “top” business wise. They played with fire and got burned.

When valuing a business you consider forward prospects and discount those to a present value.

With no CL football for the foreseeable future, resulting in reduced revenues across the line (merchandising, TV, Tickets) , Arsenal is in the process of losing a considerable part of its value.

      1. Wenger always spends so much that he can reach the 4th place. This time his calculation backfired, as his team is not up to rescue his ass this time. With team i mean Sanchez. lol.

      2. I don’t know in all honesty.
Arsenal shares is what matters, share prices can be manipulated by having cash reserves and also the shareholders desire to let go of them.

2 things we seen as soon as David Dein left Arsenal.

Savings to prepare for the stadium move and making sure we have enough in the bank incase we slip up…
Our old board (excluding Dein) made that pact to never sell to a majority shareholder who was foreign, we had the ‘British pride’ on our side. PFFT!!

On field we have been dropping since Dein left, business wise though it grew.

Silent Stan shows no desire to sell so if someone wanted to buy Arsenal then they would have to offer enough to convince Stan to sell, offering more than market value. If that happened then AFC worth would increase again…

We have the great stadium and great training facilities… In theory it should only be a few years before we can be on top if managed right (on and off the field). That hasn’t changed.

Think of Walmart… They are not a fancy supermarket but they are worth a lot. AFC has been spreading it’s name across the world with PR tours… Silent Stan is turning us into the Walmart of football clubs :'(
We have such a world brand now that on field performances matter less. Advertising works.

Advertising can obscure reality a lot and Arsenal have been doing a LOT of that with Silent Stan.

  5. we heard enough. the talking and writing is all in vain. the extension is already signed and the board and mr stubborn are making the mickey out of us lovers of arsenal fc. who needs overmars, as long mr stubborn is still there. gooner = forever

  6. It is nothing but conjecture to say Wenger has already signed a contract. There is simply ‘no’ evidence of this.

Let’s wait, the pressure is building and rest assured some of us are making as much noise as possible considering the majority of Emirates guests are football tourists wearing half and half football scarfs.

    AFC since 1886 not 1986

  7. Wenger keeps saying we’ll know soon, but I would like clarification from Wenger as to how long “soon” actually is?

    1. Wenger would only dodge the question by 1st pointing out that the universe is very very old and a few hundred thousand years could be considered ‘soon’, obviously Arsenal FC is not a universe so it will not be a few hundred thousand years.

Then we would see that wrinkly smile of his.

  8. “There is a little rumour going on that Ivan and Arsene are having a little cold war and that Gazidis is the main drive for change.”

    Really?
“Wenger wants to go on and has told the club that he is ready to “reinvent” himself and Arsenal do believe that the 67-year-old is capable of becoming what Gazidis has called a “catalyst for change”.”

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/04/02/ivan-gazidis-underlines-arsenal-planning-change-summer-whether/

Where is your references or is it you twisting it to fit your perspective?

“But of course this is all speculation”
At least you admit it, why do you not speculate the other side as well? It would either reinforce your argument or show that your argument has flaws… I fear you know it will expose flaws so you will not entertain any other idea apart from the echo chambers you sit in.

“the only reason I fear hiring ex players who’ve played for Wenger is they could be another ‘yes man’.”
If Overmars is going to be a yes man then it will be a yes man for his boss, not for his bosses employee!
Learn to think FFS. Only way we will not get a ‘yes man’ is if someone with passion bought the club and done it themselves, basically a David Dein! Every employee will be saying yes to his boss. Do you want this job? YES. Will you do x,y,z? YES. Will you take the blame? YES Will you bend over and take each of the board members one by one? YES!!! If the person wants the job bad enough then the only answer they will be saying to those things is YES SIR. 1st thing, recognize that! 2nd thing, think about who they are saying yes too, who is paying them? Simple things but K misses the obvious AGAIN.

“The whole director or football role is one that doesn’t add up with Arsene staying.”
If you can’t do maths then you can’t add it up, it is simple though.
Wenger isn’t immortal. Wengers best years was with Dein doing a lot of that. 2 simple reasons which go against not having a DoF type of role. I bet Stan is thinking that he could gamble and get the best out of Wenger and once the club has reduced Wengers role enough then a new manager will be easier to manipulate. At least from a sporting point of view we could look at getting the coach type of manager and not business type of manager. Oh another reason why getting it now makes sense.

“Arsene still won’t make a substitution before minute 60 if his life depended on it!”
Ramsey for ElNeny in the 59th min… Watch the games or STFU about them.
Let me guess, next time you talk about subs you will say he never makes them in the 1st half? Wenger is poor IMO at subs as he makes the wrong choices from my perspective, even though he made that sub in the 59th min I do believe Ramsey shouldn’t have came on and that was a wasted sub. Do not feed false beliefs, the reality of it is Wenger is not great at making them and as such doesn’t make them when a lot of us fans feel he should be. See, I can see his faults, I just don’t say the man is nothing but a big walking fault.

“He won’t change his tactics either.”
Again, as above. I can point to the times he went from a 4231 to a 433… it is a change and as such it proves what you said to be BS.

“And even if Overmars or Zorc is appointed and they pick some of the players we buy,”
Error already, they shouldn’t pick who is bought, they should just make the transfer happen, the manager should pick who is bought. If we had Pep and Pep wanted player X but Overmars bought player Y then it is disharmony within the club and we will not get the best out of Pep.

“if Arsene doesn’t like them, he won’t pick them.”
If Pep doesn’t like them, he won’t pick them. Hart? Aguero not as happy anymore.

“I hope that the board and the players go the owner and say “Look, things are not working with that guy”, but sadly I don’t see us doing it.”
Thats because the players see more than us and the players appear to be giving Wenger their support.

“Arsene spent 90 million this summer and he went backwards from where he was when he only bought a sole goalkeeper. ”
We all bragged about Xhaka before he kicked a ball, he has since been stubborn about his playstyle and reckless challenges… Xhaka has let the club down.
Mustafi came in after the loss to Liverpool and we went unbeaten for how many games? Our CM then had issues and team started to fall apart.
Perez… We bid for Lacazette before getting him and fail. Why didn’t the board make the funds available to get him? Why got for bargain buy?
    Shows a lack of ambition.

“The protests are doing a good job.”
No they are not. The supporters are divided and the atmosphere from the supporters is vile. It is just giving an excuse for the ugly side to get out and not the beautiful side.

“Times change, and Arsene’s banned this word from the dictionary at Arsenal, but football is a game of eras.”
Ne he hasn’t. You spouting BS again.

“He cannot do this overhaul. Arsene is a figure splitting the fans and slowly but surely people are leaning onto the Wenger Out side of the equation.”
More and more appear to be turning on the board from what I have seen, demanding the board to make us competitive and show ambition, the board appear to be listening to this more than Wenger out morons as the infrastructure is what is rumored to change.

“If you think this season is bad, wait until next year, to see Arsene’s “revolution” and it will be even worse. Even if we change 10 players, we still have 15 more who don’t like him.”
Name them. You can’t. Players as a whole are supporting Wenger.

“If he stays, he’s only creating more enemies for himself. Even if we appoint new personnel like a director of football, if they don’t have power over him, it won’t change a bit.”
    Scare mongering.
What if the new DoF is a yes man to the board and not Wenger? It wouldn’t be Wenger holding power over him.

“Lastly, I want to say that nowadays I follow more what fans say after the games”
That is why you know nothing John Snow.
    Watch the games for yourself.
Listening to just what fans have to say means you will only be hearing what the media is saying, a lot of fans are doing what you do, they do not think for themselves. Do you think scientists go “Hmmm your research must be wrong because 90% of people think the world is flat!” They did for a time and look at how that held us back. Moral of this is LEARN TO THINK FOR YOURSELF!

“I have been following this club for the better part of my life”
Time of supporting a club means little when it comes to looking at the facts, you can be a lifelong supporter and be as clueless as a newborn if you do not pay attention and a new supporter can know more if they research and learn.

“We’ve turned into a business rather than a football club and that mentality has spread from Wenger to players”
Do not pick and choose what is the top to manipulate people’s thinking, the top is the owner. That simple.
Owner is weak so we need to toughen him up. Once toughened then he will make the actions and the manager will be strong, if not then the now strong board will be strong about this and sack him to get a strong manager.
Much easier to comprehend when you take a step back and go “Oh my, Wenger isn’t the top, there are people above Wenger! Those people need to grow a pair of ….”

    1. Even an article won’t be this long, you use a lot of strength to defend Wenger. couldn’t read your essay man, summarize your stuff sometimes

  9. Obviously Wenger is waiting to see how we perform. However if he decides to leave after all the pain this indecision has caused, fans will not remember him very fondly.

  10. Yes what is going on? If he plans to stay I’d like it announced now so the grenades from the arsenal fans can Start flying. With 7 games left we still may have time for him to stand down and we let someone else manage the transfers and are season at least. Bouldy, overmars anyone come in and keep things ticking over until th permanent man is recruited. If true about gazidis steaming ahead to try and secure overmars EV en though AW doesn’t agree then I think it’s clear how he Ivan feels. Reminds me of Ivan signing welbeck whilst Wenger was Reffing a game in Rome with the pope.

  11. I believe that Ivan’s and Arsene’s main focus is making up a perfect excuse to why they’ve sold Alexis to a premier league rival. Transfer window is none of their concern, and neither should be ours, we are life stock they need for milking money.
Also, if Wenger stays, we can have the best players in the world in every position, we’d still be out of the title race come February.
Trust me, the only big thing happening regarding Arsenal this summer will be Alexis leaving to a premier league club.
