What Unai Emery said in the dressing sums up Arsenal

Can you imagine what Sir Alex Ferguson would have said to his players if they got beat in the same way that Arsenal did last night?

The same with Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp or even Mike Basset, just think about what the scene would have been like.

You just know they would have been seriously pissed, they would have let the players know what they have done, what they have cost the club, what they have subjected the fans to but not Unai Emery, not according to Granit Xhaka.

‘Him [Emery], the players, nobody speaks in the dressing room,’ said Xhaka.

Asked the manager said nothing, Xhaka said: ‘I don’t know. He was disappointed of course. ‘I think we know how we played. We know we lost the game.

‘It is not about shouting. It is not about shouting everything if we lose.

‘You can say a lot now but it is not the time to explain why and what happens. ‘I think it was a big chance for us and we didn’t take it.’

And that sums up the state of our club right now.

Those players should have got on the plane home with fury ringing in their ears, they should have been sent home knowing without a shadow of the doubt the utter crap they put us through.

Instead, they get no bollocking, no home truths, no condemnation, they get the silent treatment and sent off on luxury holidays without so much as a whisper in their ears.

All this bollocks about not being the time to tear into them is not acceptable, they do not deserve to be given space to get over their pain, screw that, they deserve no sympathy, they deserve pure vilification.

It is one thing to lose with passion and putting up a fight but it is a whole other thing to be so feckless and weak and they should have been told that.

I would have been screaming at them as they were walking down the tunnel, on the coach, on the plane, even in the toilet, they would have cried themselves to sleep following the vitriol I would have unleashed on them, I would have told them you, you and fucking you will never play for Arsenal again, but I am not Unai Emery and the players can be thankful for that.

  1. We have a squad full of lazy, mentally weak, ungrateful bunch of losers.
I don’t even look forward to next season, Wish there’s a way to chase all of them out of the club starting from every staff to the senior players.

At least it’ll be understandable if we were always performing like this with our academy players but no, our senior players are the ones.
Really I don’t mind giving more than five academy players starting spot next season.
The thing is it won’t happen, Emery won’t do it, now where was the wisdom in trading our top four chances for the EL??

    1. I agree 100%! We are a bunch of f**king losers + ruined my damn week!

I wish i could just say ” i’m done with this club” but im a gooner 4 life which equals quaranteed heartache!!!

    2. I was shocked any player looked upset or were even crying… Why??? You all played a European FINAL at the pace of a pre-season friendly and expected to win!!!! My god!!! What is wrong with these players?

  2. I don’t even care that much about the loss; it was a game between two teams and a team had to lose. What angers me is how we lost and how we lose most games. How we became a joke in the league. How every team is confideni against arsenal.

    1. Agree ArsenalWhy, we played ok in the first half and should have taken our chances but after that, it was a terrible performance. I thought on paper the teams were pretty even before the match but yesterday showed the gulf between the squads.

  3. Rubbish article.

Shouting won’t help us. How the hell does a screaming manager correlate with the clubs mentality?

Last I checked successfully run organisations have strong goals, and work philosophies carrying them to their successes, not superiors screaming at people who didn’t perform.

Emery needs to revamp his tactics and come up with an Arsenal model with a clear defensive tactical model.

He then needs to identify which players he needs for this model and get rid of those that are surplus to requirements.

We need a defined, strong model and philosophy (get rid of Wenger’s)

    1. Well said. He will need time though. A lot of Arsenal fans are ready to replace him after every loss.

      1. Yes, the sad thing about people in general, is that they only care about results.

Not what it takes for you to get there or how, and which unfortunately requires a large amount of time.

In the absence of results, people tend to find individual and isolated things and immediately come up with what their think are “solutions”. Example “WE NEED A WINGER” this season, past seasons was “WE NEED A PROPER DM” or “WE NEED A CB” etc.

Our issues at Arsenal stem deeper than buying ans selling football players, those solutions only paper the cracks. Trust me if we got rid of Ozil with Isco, it certainly won’t change us from bottling games season after season when it really matters. hell even if we got ourselves Koulibaly, we’re still going to concede soft easy goals.

And don’t get me started with those silly ideas of building a team around a player (NO WE DIDN’T NEED TO BUILD THE TEAM AROUND RAMSEY), Dormund doesn’t build a team around a player(they’ve lost so many great players), they build a team around a model/philosophy.

        1. True …only problem is that after a year watching it’s clear to me that Emery has no footballing philosophy or vision … Manages players not a team …that was problem with PSG … So while I believe problem is ultmatey the greedy yank … And fans need to visibly turn on him at matches …we should be looking now for a different manager … How about the Ajax guy … From the pep school young and ambitious … Tbh I would take wolves manager over Emery … So there are possibilities out there … Need to bring the passion back at moment we are a pale corporate asse class

          1. Rkw at least someone who’s ready to push these players and let them know there are consequences. Am truly disgust with this team, am more disgusted with the manger, the football is dying gradually. No entertainment, no passion, no directions, no vision, no desire, not commitment, hunger, fans are becoming hopeless. Emery should go please. We can not sack 12 players, or even more. The manger should go, bring someone that will charge us, even ARTETA, I don’t mind. We urgently need rebuilding and it shouldn’t be Emery.

            1. Pat, I supported Emery from the start. But just like Eddie I lost faith in him 3 months into the season because I saw some trait of Wenger in him. He is a decent coach but he has failed to show me anything this season that he can take us further. I could not careless about how bad some fans thinks our players are, the job of a coach is to combined their qualities to reduce their inadequacies. And if Emery can’t do that as he rightly showed then maybe the job is not for him. The way he set up defensively is atrocious and reminds me of Wenger.

        2. Two great posts of yours. So many Gooners speak with their anger and disappointment instead of using their brains to think first. If anyone seriously thinks Fergusons hairdryer treatment would be accepted or tolerated by todays snowflake players they are seriously daft. Times were very different even 15 years ago. Now the players would go crying to Mummy if the “nasty” manager shouts at them. Sad , pathetic even, but certainly true. All managerment is largely about how to manage people and keep them onside and motivated. Wenger failed to motivate players for years by being too soft, too afraid to make his opinions known and went to the opposite extreme of Fergies hairdryer. That TOO was wrong. Good man management is FAR more nuanced than just shouting or being silent and saying nowt! . You need to win hearts before you can ever hope to minds. One key problem Emery has, which is rarely mentioned by Gooners, is his broken and faltering English. I know he can speak Spanish but not to ALL the players and that is not helpful, since English is the club language used in the dressing room. It is about being a group, ONE group, not factions. Klopp is superb as a man manager even without the depth of squad City can boast. Emery is nevertheless doing well ,even though the hotheads will not see that truth and prefer anger and shouting their disappointment and hurt in childish fashion, as this article shows. You need to build a team and squad and building takes time and real support from the money men, ie Kroenke and so Emery is battling with his arms tied . Realists and truth lovers know that and say so. Childish fans simply shout their frustration. TWAS EVER THUS!

  4. Can someone remind me why Ozil is worth over £300,000 per week?
    I forgot

Anyway, it wasn’t just him. It was the whole team

We need at least 7-8 new players in the Starting Line-up alone
We were LUCKY to get 5th place

  5. Ramsey, the player they should have built the team around is going for free and now they can’t attract the major names or afford to buy them-brilliant!

    1. This is what I wonder. Is like people on the inside want to destroy arsenal from within. Let go of Ramsey and keep useless players.

      1. Are you just supporting arsenal or what. Ramsey is equally bad if not worse. Tell me what he had in his 11 years as an Arsenal player and compare that with Ozil. They both deserve to be shown the door with others like Elneny, Jekinson, Xhaka, Kos

  6. Yeah, this S**T has been going on for too long now!

    Same crap, different toilet..

I still feel Wenger stayed too long at the club. His Mediocre approach (Top 4 will do) and his reliance on average cheap purchases has well and truly set the rot in.

It’s like a bacterial infection that has spread through the club. Keown summed it up last night when he said Ozil performs better with quality around him. He’s used to it and played with the best there is. Wenger told Ozil when he bought him that the team would be built around him. Well, yes, Ozil has been crap but hey, he’s surrounded by it!!!

When you mix high quality with a lesser quality you get a diluted article. Arsenal are just that.

You get what you pay for (or dont)..

    1. so this is your excuse for Ozil not able to create an attempt on goal .
If emery is not careful he will be sacked because of most of these players . Ozil for one is a virus of controversy .Arsenal players are over entitled .simple .
the management of arsenal is as terrible of the pitch .
WE suffer from an identity crisis . we are no longer a big club and we should face it .
i said it months ago that a lot of players in the academy deserves spots in the first eleven . A good example is Medley . Kosc and Sokratis have been shit for a while
Tottenham continually plugs its team with youth and survive . We have a better academy why cant we do the same . Will Nelson do worse than Miki.
People blame the owner but other than lack of passion for the sport he has done nothing wrong . Did he force them to give OZil a deal that robs the club , did he force them to shell out 65 million on then 29 year old without dynamism , did he force them to buy Xhaka and Mustafi for 35 million each when there where better players for cheaper . Was he the one who decided to maintain Steve Bould in this team .
We need to ask ourselves what direction are we going as a club. i strongly believe we have a lot of rotten eggs and the team is a reflection of the manager . just imagine the amount of players
the future of arsenal is dark indeed .

  7. Emery spent over £70 million preseason, mainly on the defence and how have we progressed? Well we haven’t and we’ve lost any little style we had. The man is a disaster, the worse signing we’ve made.
    #EmeryOut.

  8. guys remember this.
unai isn’t the manager like Wenger was. he is the head coach.
whatever squad we will be having next season will be all vinai sanlehi and edu if he comes.
they will set the targets next season for Emery and for each individual player.
arsenal management is not like before we are now run like Barcelona and real Madrid.
If we end up next season like this season I believe Emery will be gone.
we have power sharing at the club now.and blame is also equally shared.
this is the time to see real competence in the job

  9. The arsenal manager’s incompetence and naivety is a true reflection of most arsenal fans.
Both suggested the squad that played and branded it “the strongest“.
Take it from me: Mavropanos, Iwobi, Mkitaryan should be the first names on the team sheet, otherwise the squad is weak.

  10. Emery at fault yet again. Set the team up with no real support for our attack other than wingbacks.

It was obvious to all that Emery is a second rate manager, top coach but poor manager at the best…

I want Emery gone, I know it won’t happen but I do feel he is the issue now with Arsenal.

As for our players… they were good enough to virtually get top 3 in the bag while learning a new style until Emery decided to tinker.

We have players good enough to get UCL football right now, if only we had a manager capable of picking the right team and formation.

3412 with 2 deep CM ahead of 3CBs. Just think for a moment at how stupid that was.
As soon as Chelsea neutralize our wide threats then how was we going to get the ball to our attack?

Xhaka and Torreira were too deep for 90% of that game, allowing Chelsea to come onto them and build from the middle, playing into Chelseas hands for their style.

Only one man at fault for this. Emery. He needs to go.

  11. There is absolutely no point in ranting at players, many of whom will hopefully never pull on our red shirt again.I include Socratis in a list of nine players who must be moved on, one way or another to pave the way for a revolution in the shape and age of our squad. We need to have faith in our talented youngsters and give them an opportunity to perform on a regular basis next season.Emery needs to scrap the defensive back three system and play with a flat back four in line with virtually all the successful sides in Europe. As our absentee owner is highly unlikely to inject cash for the working capital required to compete with Man City, Liverpool etc there is no alternative other than to turn to youth as the way ahead. In this regard I would promote Freddie Ljunburg to replace Bould , as he has built up a good rapport with all the youngsters who must be trusted to step up.

    1. The old English proverb clearly states that barking dogs seldom bite. Put the other way one can say that dogs which bite seldom bark. Hence we should not make any conclusions from Emery’s muted reaction. I am sure players are more worried about this reaction than if he had raved and shouted in anger. William Shakespeare, the famous English playwright put it aptly when he said that heard melodies are sweet but unheard ones are sweetest! What should we have expected Emery to say that he hadn’t told his players prior to the match? What we need now is action. Let the axe fall on all those players who have consistently let down the team. I will not mention names but I believe the manager is wise enough to identify those who have proved incapable of performing to expectations. I am not shy to say that this is the worst team in Arsenal’s recent history. When we lost to Barcelona in the Champions League final of 2006 we put up a valiant fight even though we were a man down for about 80 minutes. Much as we were disappointed we were proud of our players then. But yesterday we were greatly embarrassed about our team There must be a fundamental change at Arsenal to restore the spirit of 2006.

  12. Cech out > Ospina IN
    Welbz out > Nketiah IN
    Licht out > AMN
Ramsey out > Hector Herrera IN

This is how we can replace outgoing freebies. These 4 players free up 390k weekly wages. Replacements warrant about 200-220k.

Then to offload underperforming, expensive, too old players:

    Mustafi £15-20m
    Özil £20-25m
    Xhaka £20m
    Elneny £10m
    Monreal £2-5m

Approx 70-80m in fees, wages saved about 600-650k weekly.

Who can we lure in and is in our budget?

    CB Manolas £31m

Tall, immense defender in his prime. Release clause, Roma not in CL. Wages will likely be about 100k a week.

    LB Grimaldo £20-25m

Young, fast defender from Benfica. Very solid season with 12 or so assists. We are bigger than Benfica and can probably triple his wages, approx 70-90k a week.

    CAM/W Ziyech £25m

Will leave Ajax, got a release clause of reported £25m. I think he said he really likes Arsenal? If hes not set on CL football, we could bring him in. Wages probably 100k a week.

    CB Mario Hermoso £18m

Linked with him, he’s a decent CB and very young still. I wouldn’t count on Kosc being fit all season so we need cover.

    RB Max Aarons £10-15m

19y old RB of Norwich, could be available. Very promising player.

Then CAM Maurice of Lorient and GK Schubert of Dresden. First will be 10m, second FREE. These are for the future no doubt.

And don’t forget we got Reiss Nelson coming back. What do you guys think?

    1. That actually brings back a bit of hope. I just hope they manage to offload the flops. Only managing that would already make me very happy. Seeing Ozil off would be a successful season for me. If the club doesn’t manage to sell him, next season I wouldn’t have him in the 1st squad. Entire season with U23 until he leaves on his own.

  13. Where is the reference for these comments?

    On a similar note, Unai has already mentioned some players need to go;

“Our idea is to continue to carry on and improve with the young players that have arrived,” Emery said. “Maybe some players need to leave but it’s not the moment to speak about that.”
    sky

SO, I wonder…why Yell at a lot of players who you want to leave?

  14. I personally think that we need to move on 3/4 of our squad and start again.. Buying a few up-coming talents and promoting the talent we already possess in our youth teams! Our beloved club is in dire straits and I feel the only way to do so is by wiping the slate clean by getting rid of all the old guard and starting a-fresh! Like what’s been happening @ Ajax !
It’s either that or the rot shall continue to spread ! We have been on a free fall for far too long and if this continues, I really fear for my main love “The Arsenal” !
I hate the fact that we pay the 4th highest wages in the league, have probably the 3rd richest billionaire owner but still finishing out the Champions league spot for the third year running.. that’s simply unacceptable ! I really hope that Lady Nina Bracewell nd the other fella who ousted David Dein for trying to convince the “old board” to sell their shares to Usmanov are happy clapping all the way to the bank and have left us, the real heart nd soul of Arsenal all for-dead ! They got conned by the biggest conner and now Newcastle’s gonna take our place in the top of the table.. THANKS!

  15. After match bollocking?
Pointless since most of them know they are on there way out!!
Makes you wonder if they didn’t want Emery to get too much extra funding doesn’t it?
Come on Kroenke cough up 200million and lets get clearing out the deadwood!!

  17. All over the news, were that Barcelona’s dressing room after losing to Liverpool was solemn like that of a funeral.
Valverde said nothing and Messi was inconsolable ….
Does that sum up Barcelona? Or maybe, Arsenal is like Barcelona…
Stop making up stories to add insult to our injuries
We’ve known how bad our team is and how dire we’ve needed serious overhaul in order to be successful with a particular philosophy. But as soon as Arsenal win a game or two we seem to forget this need, boost our expectations and assume that the team is okay. Therefore, always looking out for a scapegoat.
Imo, 5th in epl was a gift. We had no business doing in the Europa finals. It Just happened that we got to these positions due to poor performances from our competitors this season.
#Invest, buy wisely (scout for lions not sheep) …sheep that lack all sense of urgency even when time is not on our side.

  18. What many supposed fans don,r realise it that this his premier season the team he inherited was not not good, injuries, also he had to restructure a lu3 see

    1. Thank goodness another season is upon us in 3 months time. There and then we will know the measure of Emery. All these excuses of the players not his will be crushed.

  19. But was is it only the players who played for Arsenal yesterday that were at fault? What of Emery who shouldn’t have started Cech and Monreal in the match in the first place in my own understanding. Had he started Leno and Mustafi instead of Cech that he started to mann the goal against his former club – Chelsea that he still love and will join their coaching staff after leaving Arsenal this summer. Surely, Arsenal would not have conceded the 4 goals that they conceded to Chelsea. For his having the required level of pace going forward to attack the ball or provide assist and also track back to defend, Mustafi is a better option to start the match than the now slow to recover to defend – Monreal who Emery in his blunders started yesterday. And wouldn’t start a goalkeeper Cech on the basis to give him a farewell match to honour him in an Important Cup final match which Arsenal have to win to get what they been looking for for the past 3 seasons. By the way, how many Premier League games did Cech start for Arsenal before they reached the ELC final? Probably less than a handful of them I believe. Okay, he has had some cameo starts in the Europa League, Carabao Cup and in the FA Cup but lost at home to Spurs and Man Utd in both the domestic Cup games. But had success in the ELC losing only once at away. But the good cameo starts he had in the ELC before the final shouldn’t have blindfolded Emery to start him in the ELC final yesterday. This is because playing against his former club that his hoping to rejoin soon as a coaching staff will make him liable to help Chelsea get their hands on the ELC than to see Arsenal getting their hands on the Cup that they so badly wanted to win.

  21. I`m surprised anyone can understand what Emery say`s in the dressing room to be honest.
He sounds like an Aquaphibian from the classic puppet show StingRay !………………only people on life support machines will remember that show and thats if they are not suffering from dementia !, but if anyone is curious they can look it up on youtube.
AquaMarina from the show was one of my first loves and I even wrote to her about my love for her, begging her to run away with me, but she was not interested in a no strings attached relationship.

    1. Well about bloody time, Le Coq! I was beginning to think you’d been beaten to a pulp with those slippers!!
Your humour is just the tonic we all need!! Haha I can’t understand a word he says & I find myself saying H’s just like how he does, like I’m bloody Spanish ??.. I get some funny looks from people, but what the hell (?)
The first comment I’ve cried with laughter at today, thank you, Le Coq ?

      1. Hi Sister Sue 🙂

I only found out about the result this morning as I was abucted by aliens from Uranus yesterday and been returned for my birthday today !……………..what a shit birthday present, it can only be better if I have a belated present in the form of Bindippers winning the CL as I hate the Spuds more than anything, yes even more than Kroenke !
In a list of things I hate the Spuds take up the top billion positions, after that I hate the Spuds womans team and I cant wait for Arsenal Woman to destroy them and like we love to celebrate St Totterighams Day the Woman can celebrate their version………………St Titteringhams Day ! hahahaha

        1. Happy Birthday!! Last night really was a pisser! Now I just want to go & hibernate until Saturday is a thing of the past!! Fancy having to cheer Liverpool on ?
          St Titteringham’s ? so funny!!

          1. Thanks Sue…………………………I`m no different now to when I was a kid in that I open my cards and look for money and I`m disappointed when there is none !……….now I`m not a shallow person, but dont send me any cards without some fcuking money in them !…………………….
            😆

Right……… family with food stuff beckons !………….my missus has made me some Pie&Mash !…………….the Bethnal Green boy in me is still strong !……………….where you from Sue ?

  22. BGT is now on and I predict that if we can achieve a position higher than Simon Cowell`s trousers next season then CL is a certainty !

  23. sometimes silence does more talking than all those words you wished to be communicated to the players. They did not need more rebuking than their conscience gave to them. I guess they got the message through silence.

  24. Reality check folks. We had an unbeaten run of 22 games. That ended when we lost 3 players for the rest of the season. Two of those were defenders, 1 world class and the second was actually starting to realize his potential. Second point is that we are not going to have a transfer budget to rebuild. So its going to be at least a few of the young guns coming through. Its a bit of as changing of the guard in football as well with a lot of top players coming to the end of their careers. Its going to be few years before we compete for the title again, simply put we don’t have the right owner who will provide the means to do so. Next year will be interesting as Emery will have to use the young players more and well find out just how good or bad they are. It could be a disaster as so many of you are predicting or it could turn out to be amazing with new starts rising. gooner for life either way. COYG

  25. I had to watch the full match again and after looking closely at the 3 non-penalty goals conceded, my three decades experience of coaching football at all levels sums up that Petr Cech purposely failed to dive full stretch to save them for. Yes, he made some vital saves but I can only conclude that he’s a decent match seller.

  26. I agree with the article. Until we get a new owner and then a new manager, Arsenal are condemned to 6th or worse.

  27. Get rid of the lot of them and play the kids. Willock was the only one that went for it and Iwobi. Although when starting Iwobi doesn’t play that well. Auba and Laca were awful, Cech being played in the final against a team he is joining next year…wow that’s going to go well! Niles I just don’t understand the hype about him, far to easy to beat.

Until Kroenke goes and that’s no time ever this is how it’s going to be. So my advise is try not to let results like this ruin your week. You can’t do anything about our awful players so don’t let them spoil your life.

  28. We have lost it. This is what happen when there is bad management.
Should he[Emery] not query the player if the board are going to query him.
It all boils down to the fact that the OWNER, BOARDS, COACH, STAFFS, PLAYERS are not taking the team serious and they do not care about the the Fans.
We are not getting back to UCL anytime soon.
Is not better to support a lower division team than to support Arsenal FC.

  29. sometimes I just laugh at certain thoughts of people..every one is entitled to their opinion but perspective is needed sometimes,,the days of Fergie hairdryer or coaches screaming are gone, now we have millionaires, how can u just scream at a multitude of millionaires with agents and teams of lawyers without expecting a repercussion, players are different and therefore the coaches approach will vary,I’m not supporting emery for silence but I know he would have his reason for doing that,he might want them to reflect on the defeat for sometime then see how they react to know the ones who can still be redeemed..look at guardiola approach to Sterling and sane,he explains things to Sterling but he’s tried that with sane and it wasn’t working, then he went the hard way with sane,,point is this millionaires require different approach..how I wish there was a rule to prevent lawyers and agents from interfering with football, you guys would have known that sarri is a real thing and might have beaten up hazard during the mid season for talking about Madrid lolllzzzz
