Why Arsenal must not use Szczesny as cup keeper

Look Arsenal fans, I am hoping that the transfer capture of Petr Cech from Chelsea, which will hopefully be announced on the Arsenal website this week, will not only make the Gunners into real Premier League title contenders straight away, but will help our Poland international Wojciech Szczesny to finally realise the awesome potential that he showed when first breaking into the Arsenal team a few years ago.

Neither do I think that Arsene Wenger should use Cech exclusively, so I would not mind seeing Shezzer getting plenty of chances to shine in the various cup competitions. But I do not think he should automatically play in all of the cup games.

For one thing, it is imperative that Arsenal get over that hoodoo of going out of the Champions League at the first knockout stage. That could mean winning our group so we cannot afford any Anderlecht style slip ups. And if we get a chance to retain the FA cup it will no doubt see us face some big games.

The most important game of the season, however, could be the one before it all kicks off. Arsenal face Chelsea in the Community shield and this will be no tame warm up game. Both teams and managers will be desperate to strike an early blow and if we can do it, that breaks Wenger’s duck against Jose Mourinho and sets us up perfectly and with great belief for the serious business to follow.

So the last thing we want to do is play the second choice keeper. Cech must start that game at Wembley, even if it was not against his former club. The fact that it is makes his place even more vital. Can we finally get one over the Portuguese pillock?

  1. Wenger will play Szc in FA cup that is for sure. If I was manager I would have send Szc on loan to other PL club and kept Ospina as backuo for Cech but Ospina is too good for second choice.

I am really amazed no club from England, Spain, Germany, France or Italy are showing interest to sign him. He was awesome today except few mistakes.

      1. Are you blind or something? Fabianski was one of the top 2 Prem keepers last season. Hes ten times times better than Ospina. Firstly, Fabianski has 10 times better reflexes and handling and he’s way better coming off his line and one on ones. Ospina is no more than backup quality. He wouldn’t start for a top 10 team. In his first 5 games he barely had a save to make and he’s let in way too many soft goals.

        1. I might be blind but if you have not seen today’s game then pls watch and then comment here. Ospina was awesome

          1. Ospina stopped close age shots from messi and agüero in kss than 2 seconds. He also stopped close range shots by Neymar. He kept clean sheets vs both teams. Totally agree….pls go Watch you tu e replays of those games an then comment on Fabian ski and Ospina. Don’t get me wrong I love Fab and I am thankful for that FA cup he was the keeper of. But what I Ve seen these days of Ospina. ….just world class

    1. Szczesny is not good enough he’s only being kept for his home grown status,Ospina is 26 years old while Szczesny is 25 years old only a 1year gap between them and I can say without hesitation that Ospina is the better goalkeeper

      1. You clearly haven’t watched them enough. I’ve seen Ospina at Nice and Columbia in the past. I also watch Szczesny internationally. The difference between the two is night and day. Szczesny is 10 times better at commanding his area, he’s 10 times better at distributing the ball, better at rushing out, one on ones, throwing and his handling is in a different league.

          1. And commanding his area? Up until our late turnaround last season incoming crosses has been our Achilles for a donkeys age, that and sharp counters.

    2. Signing Cech would mean two situations arising :- i)Using Cech as 1st choice keeper in EPL AND UCL and using Sczeszny in cup and league Cup games and selling Ospina.ii) Sending sczeszny on loan and using Cech as 1st choice keeper in EPL and League cup and Ospina for UCL and FA Cup.I would choose ii).

      1. No, Cech will be league and UCL. The number 1 keeper being paid a lot of money. Why would any sane manager bench him for the most important competition?

        1. Yeh, like we are gonna put the inferior (hence No.2) keeper in the cup games like the UCL that it is imperative we win and that requires the BEST players we have.

Per for our new striker! Big, strong, good with his head. AW can mould him into our very own Jackson Martinez!

    3. Shezney would be used in all fa cup matches, Cech the rest. That’s how Wenger goes. Too predictable. If we get cech , which I still can’t believe we will would be a massive blow to Chelsea and it will set up the community shield nicely. But let’s not forget that we still need two more signings. DM and a striker,if I got a dime for every time I said that….hope Wenger splashes the cash at least on a huge player. Let’s say we get Vidal he can play alongside lecoq, and when lecoq is not there Vidal can do the DM duties. I would be happy with Czech and Vidal, would take it right now. But let’s hope we at least get a striker who can compete with giroud and welbeck.

  2. This annual transfer window is all B******S.The sooner they stop it the better.
One big time waster. All it’s doing is keeping lazy sports journalists in work.
Unfortunately I’m mug enough to read their crap.
    Roll on the new season.

    1. Exactly, I hate the transfer window, full of crap. Can’t wait till we sign the DM and striker that we need. Just tired of waiting. Liverpool have signed 4 players already band are close to their fifth(clyne).we need to act faster in the market. I hope we go in with big offers for Vidal and dzeko. 40 mil on Vidal and 20 mil on dzeko plus the 10 mil on Cech, it will be a total of 70mil, I hope this happens soon and we can relax and look forward to a new season

      1. Stop moaning about Liverpool. They have basically bought a a bag of crap for 50 mill. Clyne will be the best of the lot and arsenal ir well stocked with good right backs. Arsenal want wc players, they are nit easy to come by. Even the mighty real Madrid often spend all summer chasing the players they want, it doesn’t happen over night. I suggest that if you are so obsessed with lots of signing, lots I comings and goings go support the next team Harry Redknapp manages! Chump

      2. Mate, Liverpool are possibly the worst operators in the transfer market of all the top flight teams for the past 5 or 6 years now. If you find yourself buying 3 or 4 new first team starters every season whilst trying to offload acquisitions from the previous few seasons then you are getting it badly wrong. It just snowballs. Rodgers has proved to be inept in this department. We got Alexis and Ozil for about the same as they got Lallana, Markovic and Firmino. We got Cazorla for less than they spent on Joe Allen. At some point in a team’s development you have to go with what you have and just tweak it each year – SAF kept the core of his teams going seamlessly and bought a high profile signing in on a regular basis to keep it ticking over. Chelsea and City have not done any official business yet. We should keep our eyes on them and let those beneath us do what they need to without fretting too much.

  3. Since Szczesny won us the cup (he played in the final) hence he deserves to start ahead of anyone.

  4. in the end if a gk doesnt get a satisfied number of games….he will leave the club…

    its pretty realistic

  5. As safe as it is to assume that Cech will be our first-choice keeper, nothing is guaranteed. As should be the same for every position in our XI.
Cup games Arsenal and Arsene have always given as an opportunity for fringe players and youth to put pressure on the first-team and show why they deserve a run. If Sczeszny is our second choice keeper come the tail end of season and he’s performed up to standard in the cup games then he absolutely should start for the hypothetical final.

  6. How about this my formula? A fit and inform Petr Cech to start in all our Epl away games & Ucl home and away games. A fit and inform Wojceich Szczesny to start in all our home & away Capital One Cup & FA Cup games. A fit and inform David Ospina to start in all our home Epl games. Ospina should be the 1st backup keeper to Cech for all our away Epl games and all our home & away Ucl games. Cech should be the backup goalkeeper for Szczesny for all our home and away Capital One Cup & FA Cup games. I think this is the best rationalization of goalkeeping starts the Boss can give to his 3 quality goalkeepers if we get Cech. And positive they will all be happy. Ospina goes no where whether he likes it or not. I believe he is still bound on contract to Arsenal. The Boss should refuse any demand by him to leave Arsenal because of the signing of Cech.

    1. Too much messing around, I say go back to the days when a no.1 keeper played it all. Do you remember David seaman being dropped for some games? No. We will have one of the top 5 keepers in the world, you don’t leave him out, full stop. Hardlines on the back up keeper, but we need to win as many trophies as possible especially the big two. Ok may be give the back up keeper some matches in the 2 domestic cups, but certainly not the finals, give him some dead rubbers in the champions league and may be one or dead cert home premier league games, against the likes of Norwich, Bournemouth, Watford, etc. There is probably enough to give the back up keepers 15 between them, but I am a strong believer of playing your best team wherever possible and certainly in the big matches.

With preseason starting so early and the season starting more than 3 weeks before the window closes, I can see wenger making just 1 or 2 signings and that includes cech. He doesn’t need to sell anyone yet, as he doesn’t need to name his 25 man squads until September 1st, so I hope he plays the waiting game on his sales, to allow alexis and some of the other internationals, time to fully recover, he can assess who is really up for being part of a 25 and can see who doesn’t want to stay unless they are in the starting x1.

    2. Team’s really can’t afford to use three squad places on GK alone. Two’s fine and a youth prospect.
Ospina is already in negotiations to head elsewhere…

  7. And also backup Ospina in our home Epl games. I think this is the best rationalization of goalkeeping starts the Boss can give to his 3 quality goalkeepers if we get Cech. And am positive they will all be happy. Ospina goes no where whether he likes it or not. I believe he is still bound on contract to Arsenal. The Boss should refuse any demand by him to leave Arsenal because of the signing of Cech.

    1. Sam AA, I knew the moment i seen your comment that id scroll down and find the exact same comment. Wish Arsenal where as consistent.

  8. @ Samuel, Nice point but you don’t rotate keepers that much. I mean you mentioned rotating Cech, Ospina and Szcenzny. That’s rotating three goalies. I don’t think its going to happen….

  9. 1st choice gk always play about 90% of the games if there is no injury….

just go look at the big clubs….Real, Barca, Chelsea, Utd, fool, City

  10. Sell Woljeick and keep Ooooooospina if he will stay as Número Dos.

Woljeick is like a few at AFC, unmovable furniture. DO is also a better all round keeper and is more reliable.

So if possible have the best two keepers on our squad and go further in all comps as a result.

  11. After this morning game Argentina vs Colombia. I sat down for few minutes to think of David Ospina’s performance.. I come to conclusion that ” I hope we are not making mistake in letting him go”..wath a heroic performance. I hope we can include a clause in sales to have him back anytime we want, that is, if we let him go eventually because, something in me tells me he will come good when he grow in age. #toogoodtobeabackup

  12. Yeah. Oooooospina is too good to be a backup gk…something tells me Petr Cech won’t meet up to the expectations of the AFC and fans

  13. Ospina CAN’T leave.
Wenger will crucify himself of he does that.
Didn’t he say that h e made all dala after world cup cause of in any case of injuries or to see the true colors of a player? Well…..no we have seen Ospina well. We d be stupid to sell him even for a bunch of money cause we don’t need it. Ospina is already a gunner and already fit in the team. He has to have his friends etc .

Mr Wenger surely can think of a way to loophole the home grown BS. …..we NEED the best players and Ospina is one of them. Period.

  14. It would be insane to sell Ospina, especially after the last match he played against Argentina, proving how he is too agile for the 90 minute matches, and bad at penalties for his reach. He should be retained for 1 more year and played in EPL along with Cheh
