Danny Welbeck has been at Arsenal for 4 seasons, and although he scored a record 5 League goals for us last season, he only has a total of 15 in 80 games in four years. Hardly the figures of a top striker!
But, after scoring again against Costa Rica as a sub last night, his record for England shows he has scored 16 goals in just 39 games, double his average for Arsenal! After the game he was asked if he thought he should be given a starting role by manager Gareth Southgate instead of being a supersub, and Welbeck replied: “I have played better in games this season for my club [Arsenal] and not scored a goal, but I did score tonight.
“I am always hungry for more. I am really excited for the upcoming weeks.
“I have got a good record when I am playing for England, scoring goals, getting into dangerous positions, players have been finding me in dangerous positions as well. I am making runs and always trying to put the ball into the back of the net.
“Tonight there was two up front, Marcus [Rashford] and Vards [Jamie Vardy], and Marcus scored an incredible goal and Vards was dangerous throughout the whole game.
“There is a lot of competition throughout the whole squad and there is a lot of talented players on the pitch. But I think that ups everyone’s game, and it is healthy competition.”
Well Danny has always had “healthy competition” at Arsenal as well, but he always seems to have problems putting the ball in the back of the net and seems to lack confidence in front of goal. I can’t understand it at all. Perhaps he will have more confidence under Emery than he did under Wenger, but I wouldn’t bet on it!
