Arsenal transfer rumour round-up – Defender demanded, Mkhitaryan update and more

David Seaman today demanded that Arsenal look into signing a centre-back this summer, to go with completed Xhaka and prospective Vardy signings.

The former England and Arsenal goalkeeper claims that they ‘need’ a centre-back added this summer, but claims that it is not because they were bad last season, which could be debated…

Seaman said: “They need a central defender, they’ve signed a new midfield player now, get Vardy and then we’re looking good.

“You look at the spine of the team. You’ve got Petr Cech in goal, brilliant. We maybe need one centre-half and then a striker.

“But they are additions to a great squad, it’s not as though the squad is crying out for it or performing badly. We did have a good season, we finished second.”

No defender’s have come up as being linked today however, although Euro 2016 is throwing up enough entertainment to keep news sources quite busy of late.

Two players we have been linked with previously are said to be closing on moves to rival clubs currently, with Bild claiming that Mkhitaryan is keen on a switch to Manchester United, and young Egyptian target Ramadan Sobhy linked with a switch to Stoke City.

The Dortmund midfielder has had an amazing 12 months in Germany, playing his part in over 50 goals, and is now pushing for the exit door. His club are at risk of losing him for free in 12 months time if they refuse to sell, which looks likely to see him quit the club in the coming months.

Arsenal tried to bring in Sobhy on a trial basis earlier this year, which was rejected, and he is now the subject of a bid by Stoke City. It is not mentioned whether they believe this interest will force us to consider rivalling such a move, but he looks likely to be a second target to move to England, but not to us.

Which defenders would you love to see arrive this summer? Should we up our efforts to sign the latter pair?

  1. Of course Arsenal need a CB. Is this really debatable?

Mert is aging and is clearly past his prime.
Chambers is likely to go on loan – which is a smart move
Gabriel has talent but was often less than solid last season.

As the article mentions…… still need a CB and a striker – anything beyond that is a bonus.

  2. We need a good defender BUT why not keep Mert and gradually introduce Chambers into the first team again next season…

That means we have Mert,Kos,Chambers and Gab…but due to Kos knocks here and there we need a defender still…

But what really struck me in the article is Bild claiming Mhik is keen on United…
Although,I don’t believe that, but if it is true, only MONEY will make him chOose UTD over us now..
We play better football,we are in CL, and we have Ozil and Sanchez +Xhaka..and Imo,he doesn’t suit ManU…

    1. Because we could have done that last season but the manager refused so for no apparent reason. And knowing him he will continue not to gradually introduce Chambers as the main starter this season hence why we need a new CB asap.
